G80 M3 / G82 M4 News Update: Competition Model, RWD and xDrive, manual still alive!

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Some good news about the G80 M3/ G82 M4, from yesterday's update in the future models info thread.

G80 M3 and G82 M4 Coupe currently have more variants than we're used to seeing.

First of all, it appears the manuals are still alive. However, there are hints that these cars will be available as both RWD and xDrive. For the first time in years, BMW is not going to force you into a car they think is best - they'll let you choose.

On top of that, there could be two different performance trims right out of the gate - you'll get a Competition model that's more different from the base M3/M4 than the old Competition Packages would provide.

On the other hand, G83 M4 Cabrio would have a more limited selection: a single model with the choice of transmission.

If the X-Drive is the same as in the M5, and comes with manual as well, very few would choose a RWD as the xdrive is faster and can still be RWD...

releasing a base and competition at the same time?

why not call the new m3/4 competition the base model and just get rid of the slightly shittier model?

my profession is not in business, maybe that's why I dont see the point in simultaneous release of both models.

yay for MT

Any time lines when it will be released? Is the M3 expected to be out before the new 4 series?

Mercedes does the same thing with the c63 and c63s.

It's just a way they can charge more for a slightly higher tuned car

This is good news.

The only remaining elephant in the room would be whether a manual gearbox is available with the xDrive variant.

If so, then choices galore, and hats off to BMW for giving the chance to "vote with your wallet".

they want to compete directly with the C63 and C63S
If they go AWD Audi will be shitting their pants as a lot of their customers bought the RS5 because it was the only one with AWD.

in 2 years there could be a M3/M4 with 475 hp and AWD that is 300 lbs lighter than their RS5 that was just released...

Wow - I'm not sure if I'd go RWD or AWD. If I lived where it never snows - probably RWD - but since I live in Chicago - guess I'll probably go AWD. Either way - if this rumor is true - looking forward to seeing the head to head RWD v AWD (at least now this forum won't be limited to 6MT v DCT, E9x v F8x or unsolicited Porsche a$$ licking threads to get everyone fired up)!!!

Right now the manual exists on all versions. However, so early in the car's development, many things that never make it to production could exist. My post shouldn't be seen as a prediction of market availability, only the fact that the manuals are still somewhere out there.

great news. Don't hesitate to drop a post like this in the M2 forums sometime about M2 " further progress.. " some day..

interesting to see that the X drive option in the M3/M4 will be just that.. an option.. like pretty much the rest of the entire BMW lineup.

This part cannot be emphasized enough.

in the new format.. BMW is trying to keep up with the Mullers... so having multiple trim levels from the jump makes sense.

Porsche has base, S, GTS, GT3, GT3RS, etc.. BMW will have base, COMP, CS, and CSL

I highly doubt that 6MT would be available with MxDrive from my discussions with a senior BMW M engineer earlier this month at the Ring. Personally, after 2 days in the F90 driving the Ring, AT MxDrive is the way to go.

I'm not convinced. I got some seat time in the F90 and I prefer the F80 DCT. Having said that, if you are talking about a AT mxdrive versus a 6MT mxdrive then I completely agree with you that the AT is the way to go. I can't see the 6MT mating well to that motor and Mxdrive
