Well, that is i next area really, i4 is more a classic BMW, that should be driven. But is the i4 a 3GT thingy or a Grand coupe?!

Its a gran coupe body style, but the back end of the I4 looks a little more chunky because it doesn't have the exhaust tips there

To me the profile looks more based on a GT platform than a GC...

Well, I have an i8, and while its certainly NOT "iBoring", it certainly is "iMpractical".

The EV thing BMW has really been missing is range, and if they deliver this with 370 miles of range that will FINALLY give them a nice firm seat at the EV table. It doesn't have to look like a spaceship. Its better it looks like a "normal" car and performs like a really good EV.

70% of EV owners charge at home and that's why a min of 200-250 miles of range is essential for a daily driver (IMHO). It seems most of the major automotive mfr's have finally started to figure this out. Now its BMW's turn...

If It's an i, what's the point of looking like any other BMW? That was the point of difference of the i8. BMW is just copying Mercedes and Audi and not taking the chance to go futuristic with their electric offerings.

Electric cars are for a whole new clientele, so why not wow them with a forward looking body like the concepts?

BTW, you need to read my original post better because I never mentioned charging and range, just design of the car...

Not to mention the range likely won't be close to the concept/goal. The iNext was quoted at mid 400's and now its down to 360 on the WLTP and who know's by tomorrow it could drop even further. I wouldn't count on range until we get production specs, even Porsche still hasn't shared their EPA numbers on the Taycan yet (although i know its gonna be dissapointing)

if other manufacture don't outgun Tesla they need to out range, anything sub 5 sec 0 to 60 is "sufficient"...

Hmmm, if i4 doesn't offer autonomous driving then it can't really compete with the Model 3. I really never understood why traditional car manufacturers are so behind Tesla. i4 after this many years is finally going to have comparable range to Model 3, but autonomous driving? Naaaah, that will be done 6 years later (or in the iNext that I'm sure will be more of a $80K car than $40K)

Tesla is still level 2 right? Though given it's all optical based and Tesla is more willing to "push" before it's prime time (see Smart summon) it can still be ahead i suppose.

I thought on the latest test as far as L2 goes Caddy now take the trophy no?

The current L2 on BMW is ok (other than LKA), wonder if the newer ones are better (I'm 2019 G30 on i6)

Pretty sure BMW uses the WLTP, expect the range to go down as well, BMW just reduced the goal range of the iNext from 400+ to 360.

Roadshow has confirmed specs and also reporting some additional i4 specs:

• 530 hp from a 80-kilowatt-hour battery, producing about 390 kilowatts (approximately 530hp)
• 373 miles range (on European WLTP cycle); expect the US number to be a bit less, probably around 340-350 miles
• 0-62 in 4 seconds flat
• Electronically limited top speed of 120 mph
• 80% charge in about 35 minutes (on 150-kW DC fast charger)
• Adds 62 miles of range in about 6 minutes (compare to current i3, which takes 17 min to do the same)
• Generation 5 battery packs
• significantly smaller than the Generation 3 and 4 packs used in current BMW EVs
• easier to package in the vehicle's floor, and allows them to be more easily scaled for smaller or larger applications
• stronger, meaning they can better handle fast-charging situations
• battery module will weigh roughly 1,200 pounds, all of which will be packaged as low as possible in the vehicle's floor, directly between the front and rear axles

That's pretty good performance. However, if these specs are reasonably accurate then this is going to be a very heavy car. EVs are typically heavier than their gasoline equivalents, yes, but given these specs it sounds like the i4 is going to weigh ~4200 lbs.

And of course the natural comparisons will be to the M3 and Model 3 Performance, where it will probably be bested in both cases. BMW is in a bit of a tricky spot because they can't upstage their flagship, but they want to make a good showing against the established EV competition.

~340-350 EPA miles sounds great, although is this confirmed for the production vehicle, as in this is what the owners will get?, Or is this a target range? Like the iNext, which BMW lowered from 400+ to 360 WLTP miles for range, and could possibly still be lowered further before debuting? And when will this i4 actually be present on dealer lots? 2020? 2021? 2022? By then, Tesla could update its Model 3 even further and get closer or beat BMW's range, its definitely possibly seeing as the Model S currently has a top range of 370 miles.

This is a tough class to compete in, Tesla is pretty much what BMW was in the compact sports sedan class years ago... the "benchmark" to which other automakers strive to.

I would be fine with 250-300 mile range really. I wanted to go with an electric car for my next lease in Feb, but there is next to no choices. If Tesla made a better interior and more choices (black headliner, Chrome delete, colors, etc.) I might have made the swtich. As it stands, the batery tech is amazing but the actual car is very boring and feels very cheap. This i4 could be a great propostion.
