Dinan intake without the lid

I bought the Dinan intake a few months ago for my M340i. The only reason I bought it is for increased turbo sounds. I have been pretty underwhelmed to say the least. It’s barely louder than stock.

I was thinking about taking the lid off and running it as an open intake and was wondering if anyone had tried that? It’s not worth the effort of taking it off and selling it to purchase a different intake. I guess heat soak might be an issue but I don’t know how concerned I am with that or if that would really be an issue. Seeing the number of open intakes available, I don’t think I’m too worried.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Has anyone tried this?

Do you also have Dinan's turbo inlet? I would explore this option before messing around and running the intake open. The inlet will remove the lower intake resonator, resulting in even more turbo noises.

I do have the inlet and I still don’t hear much.

Replacing the inlet makes zero sound difference, don’t buy into the marketing.

I’ve had both the MST and Dinan inlets, zero sound difference and zero response or power difference.

For the OP just take the lid off and drive. Seems silly to ask us when you can take the lid off in 1 minute and find out the sound difference. But to answer your question anyways yes it should make a difference in sound. I wouldn’t worry about heat soak, if that does happen which it probably won’t you lose a couple HP until you start moving again. You would never notice the difference, people are too overly concerned about heat soak.

I agree on the inlet, it made zero difference for me.

I am going to take the lid off and see what kind of difference it makes. I was just curious if anyone has tried it, that’s all.

Thanks for your response.

I have the same intake and inlet pipe. I took the lid off to see the difference the next day. It does make it a LITTLE louder, but really not much. I ended up putting the lid back on after seeing consistently higher IATs than with the lid on (I data log at least once a week with JB4).

That’s helpful, and makes sense. Thanks!

There is no harm in taking the lid, but if you are going to do that, you should not have gotten the Dinan carbon intake. You could have saved some money and gotten a regular aluminum intake instead.

Yeah, I know. When I bought it I was hoping it would be more audible. My mistake though.

I only have the intake and was considering the inlet, but this is good to know. Thanks.

Just an FYI, imo the Dinan intake started making a bit more audible noise after switching to an FCP charge pipe, as well as when letting off during aggressive acceleration. No where near as loud as other intakes that are open design.
