Anyone up for executing a more exciting Covid-19 focused comparison - M3 vs M5? Two separate families of 4, adult parents, one teenager (with intermittent access to Instagram), one child with a child seat - visiting 3 separate stores to find large packs of thin sheets made of fibrous substance, picking up a to-go family dinner, navigating 3 times through the nearest hypermarket parking lot - and returning home.

He called it a V6 and most of the cars in the drag races got bad starts which made the 340 look faster. It is not a good comparison

Oh yeah and I'm bonestock!
I have an M3 comp (and a C63s) and have driven an M340i - Euro spec, as that's where I live - and unless you were pulling away from rest, the M3 is faster, as well as being sweeter to drive, crisper turn in etc. That's not to say the the M340i isn't a great car, it is, plus for the less committed driver, it's performance is more easily accessible due to the better traction. I might even buy one at some point, but after thrashing one and then driving the exact same road in my AMG, I know which is faster.

(OK....i just checked, M550i only put out 455bhp...and with its weight, it lost, make sense...)
Weight maybe. Or perhaps they didn't use launch control. What are the respective power to weight ratios, or torque to weight?

Let's just say if you're beating any M3 or M4 from a roll (real world situation), you're probably the only one who thinks you're racing.
The only occasions I have seen anything close to a race in the last few years, was on my way home from work from an elevated roundabout, down a long slip road and joining a quiet dual carriageway (freeway to you guys), so the speeds were from 30mph to 120mph.

And the results;
535i with MPPK Vs M340i - the smaller car was faster by enough of a margin
C63s Vs S3 - you know that one, but he tried his best and was annihilated - as you would expect.

So, forget the kind of start where you need to use launch control, that never happens by chance. Not in the U.K. anyway, where we prefer roundabouts to traffic lights.

I do believe this though, if an M340i tried against the M3Comp, he would have to use the word "nearly" when describing the outcome 🤣🤣 and of course be missing out on the special driving experience of an M car.

Of course if you take it to the extreme, a Golf R would beat both of my cars from a standing start if the roads were damp, but I can live with that fact.

Interesting video.

I swapped my 335d last year and narrowed it down to an F80 M3 and a M340i as the deals were similar. In the end l went for the M340i because of the better traction with the 4wd and as much as l wanted the M3, l figured the M340i would be an easier and more comfortable daily driver with the same pace as the M3 at road legal speeds in the UK.

I think this video shows that the M340i has moved performance on so much with the new 3 series that the only way the outgoing M3/M4’s will get the upper hand is on a race track or at illegal speeds. The M340i performs much better against the outgoing M’s than it arguably should, they are wonderful cars but are being left behind in the performance stakes and no doubt the new M3/M4 cars will step up to the plate with a noticeable increase in performance over the M340i, and restore balance across the entire 3/4 series ranges.

One issue we have now, is that with the extra performance, you are talking of significant speeds when "on it".

I drive my son's Clio GT sometimes and that's actually a lot of fun with 6 speed MT and only 128ps, just at not such crazy speeds as my cars.

When are allowed out again, I think I need to try a Golf R again.

Same discusion all over again

335i N54 boys will buy m340i
M3/M4 will wait till the G80 comes out.

M340i is practical, but it's not a sexy car to look at.
My M4 with GTS hood is still looking awesome

A female friend of mine saw my M3 for first time

She just stood in front of the car and said oh my god,
your car is sexy; your hood has a bulge and the rear looks like it has hips!
