M340i or M4?
Wanted to get some thoughts from internet strangers. My 2018 Audi S5 coupe lease is over in a few months, so I am going to place an order for a BMW M340 or M4 and I am torn between them.
The heart desires the M4 since I am active with car meets, rallies, and track days but I live in Chicago so I have to deal with occasional snow. The snow is not too bad but the alley behind my apartment is never plowed, so it gets icy. Also, not sure if I should get a non-comp with extra goodies or a comp without the accessories. If this had AWD or the M440 was available this would be the winner. My brain is saying to go with the M340 since it is has AWD, just as fast to 60, better technology, and is less expensive ($100/mo). The DAP package will help with rush hour traffic and my yearly 2,000 trip to the East Coast. If the M340 had better styling like red seats, merino leather, or carbon fiber trim, it would be an easier choice since it will be similar to my S5 (also I prefer a coupe). Both will be getting summer/winter tires. Here are the builds on each- M340i xDrive: Dravit Gray, Cognac, Premium Package, 19” 791M, Driver Assist Pro, Wireless Charging, Harmon Kardon Sound, Ambient Lighting, Park Distance, black kidney grille (maybe), carbon fiber mirror caps, carbon fiber spoiler M4: San Marino Blue, Silverstone, 19” 437M, M Double Clutch, Wireless Charging, Blind spot, black grille, carbon fiber mirror caps, carbon fiber spoiler, electronic steering wheel (prefer this over HUD). OR Competition w/ 20" wheels, HUD, M Double Clutch, Wireless Charging, Blind spot Also this is my first post on this forum (short time lurker), so sorry for any formatting errors. |

Been discussed heavily, see attached link from google. M340i isn't a real M car, no point to go that route IMO unless you are stuck in snow getting out of your driveway. To each his own

I'm coming from multiple B9 S cars. If the M4 is on your radar, why don't you look at the RS5 Coupe (only mentioned coupe since you said you like them). I had the 18 S5 Coupe, 19 S4, and the 19 S5 Sportback. Now I've got an M340i that should be here in 3 weeks or so.

Get the REAL ///M with a separate set of snow tires.
Tires are the most important thing come winter not AWD. Sounds like you've been Quattro'ed for awhile. It's time for a fun and exciting car. Don't get a fake. Good luck |

My advice is to buy a X3M? No, I don't like SUVs either....but this one is special. Have you seen the Car&Driver test on it? 3.3 to 60?
BTW, the test was actually a X4, but I don't like it and the X3 is virtually identical except the roofline.

Is it really necessary to have the exact same poll twice in F80 and G20 sections? You’re going to have F80 people say F80 and G20 people say G20.

Coming from three S5s (a 2010, 2014 and 2016) I will say that if you're looking for a comparable car, then get the M340. It'll have a nicer interior than the F82, the AWD is definitely a plus and it'll be much more comfortable to drive daily. The F82 is a generation behind your B9 S5 in terms of technology and overall interior aesthetics and those things do matter. The new tech in the 340 is nothing short of astounding.
With regards to the 0-60 time comparison, sure the 340 and M4 might have similar times but this is probably due to the 340's AWD advantage. The M4 has beastly mid-range acceleration and never feels like it runs out of steam at any point in the rev range whereas the 340, like the S5, will merely feel quick. Two completely, completely different driving experiences. And as for your cold weather concerns, the M4 with snow tires shouldn't be an issue. You'll need to get All-seasons or winter tires for either car provided they both come with summer tires standard. And like alex2364 said, these polls are kind of dumb. Any section is going to vote for their own car. Personally, there's no question; the performance advantage of the M4 as well as its aggressive body are clear reasons to get it over a dressed-up 3 series. It's all about your wants and needs, and driving/spending time with both cars will surely help you make up your mind. |

You'll enjoy either of these cars or some of the others mentioned. However, you'll miss AWD and the ease/comfort of the M340 if you go full M. Conversely, the M is just more special and is the nicer car, albeit dated and on its way out. On the street there is no advantage to the M but if you drive aggressively or go to the track that is different.
Did you like your S5? What about buying it out while waiting for G82 M3 with AWD? Yeah it will be butt ugly but AWD and face melting fast if that's your thing. |

Very personal opinion but M4 feels wasteful to daily and sitting in traffic in it. It's got too much power for street while providing so little traction to unleash the true acceleration unless taken to track with proper tires in warm dry weather. Anyway too fast to enjoy on street..as in few sec you are way above speed limit. It's not a great sounding car while
cruising either. It's real fun and fast and sound decent at race track though. Interior with full leather dash option is real nice though. Yeah AWD, single turbo might be better for a daily fun and practicality. |

I had M4, I drove M340i a couple of times I would definitely go with M340i, and that has nothing to do with me being in Boston. I never had any issue with M4 in snow. But, M340i is just a more balanced package overall. M4 is better at places you will be for 5% of your driving. M340i will be better in the remaining 95%... (But I would actually wait for M440i grand coupe, just to have that new grill design)
It’s just a more balanced package overall.

Life is too short to drive a regular car. Getting to drive an M4 every drive every day is special. No brainer.

G series is a lot nicer and more modern than F series, my m340i is a daily / winter car so that was the most important to me, plus s55 sounds awful if I considered making it my summer car.

What if these are the last Dino burners? Personally I see my next purchase after the one I’m about to make as probably being electric. All manufacturers are going that way and it won’t really be an option.
So while there is a choice, I’m going with sound and visceral madness before spending a lifetime of vacuum cleaners. If you’re going to go out with a bang, what’s going to give you the most bang for your buck? I’ve driven the m340i and loved it, but do you really want to wake up 5-10 years from now and regret not having an m3. Burning Dino juice is still acceptable, but I get the feeling soon enough burning gas will be about as popular as wearing fur. The ICE days are numbered, choose wisely! Personally waiting for the g80 reveal, but something 63 has to be an option... Last edited by frenzel; 11-11-2019 at 06:18 AM.. |
