All season or winter in central NJ for RWD M340i?
Hi, i have an RWD m340i with 792m summer tire in central NJ. This is my first rwd. so I need some suggestions on if I should put dedicate winter tires with an extra wheel set or only swap summer tires to DWS06 on OEM 792m wheel.
I do understand dedicate winter tires definitely give the best grip in winter especially for an rwd. However, i feel it could be a pain to switch between twice a year, and i don't have too much space to store an extra sets. Per my experience we don't get too much snow in NJ and it seems township does a good job to clear the road quickly, at least in weekdays. So i am wondering if I can just put DWS06, which is seems good in winter/snow condition? (or Michelin pilot sport A/S 3+?), on my OEM 792 wheel and drive it all-year around. Any experience on dws06 or pilor sport a/s 3+ on a rwd in NJ? Thanks! |

I can't speak to NJ, but I've owned several RWD cars, including a 230i with A/S tires. I never had any major issues with RWD and new-ish A/S tires in light snow (2-3 inches), but it requires a bit of care and finesse.
If you work from home or can if the roads are really bad, or intentionally don't want to subject your car to winter driving, you'd probably be fine with good A/S. Both the AS/3 and DWS06 get great reviews, though seems like the DWS06's get the edge for snow. I had the previous gen DWS tires years ago and they were great in the snow, though on a FWD Saab 9-3. If you want to enjoy your M340i as much as possible, in all weather, get winter tires. That said, after a lot of thought I decided to go "all in" and get dedicated winter wheels/tires on my RWD M340. First time I've done a dedicated winter setup, so it'll be an interesting experience. I'm looking forward to one of the warmest, least-snowy winters we've ever had. |

Depends if you can stay home when it snows heavily. If you can stay home and not go out until roads are plowed then you should be fine with DWS 06.

Thanks for the detailed comments! The connivence of A/S tires compromises the performance as well as the time I can enjoy the car. It won't be a huge problem either way.
What wheels/tires set do you get on your m340i? Thanks! Quote:

I can if i know it will snow heavily, but the scenario I was thinking is a storm may come in the daytime and it gives some difficulties to get home.

I was very close to ordering a set of 19" MSW or Enkei with Pirelli Sottozero tires from TireRack.com. Then I talked to my dealer who basically matched the price for the "official" set. I'd prefer OEM wheels and 18's for winter if possible, and my dealer will mount & store the off-seasons for me as part of the price, so I went with that. Some conflicting information on whether 18's will actually fit the front on a M340i with the ZTK package (bigger rotors/calipers), but the dealer says they will. If they don't fit, I'll be back at TireRack for probably the MSW Type 73's. Another forum member has those (see thread); they fit, look good, and are a great match to the car (IMHO). Edit: 18" 796M's fit even with ZTK and look awesome! Last edited by Delta5; 10-15-2019 at 12:28 PM.. |

To know you have the right tire for the job is really calming... Winter tires are also much better on icy roads that you sometimes don't see untill you brake...

That is a very good deal! I probably will get 18" MSW 73 with Sottozero 3 unless I can find a dealer to match the price.

The debate between all season and winter tires tends to conclude decisively when one snow storm renders all season tires ineffective, leaving the driver with "I wish I purchased ..." - or equivalent expression.
The price on safety hasn't been determined yet. OP, great decision in choosing Pirelli Sottozero 3 tires. |

Why allseason? Proper summer tires and winter tires and you're set for the year. Why buy a BMW and save on tires (and safety)...

I end up ordered a full set of 796m official sets, which is ~$2150. It looks the price of the set depends on which dealer you choose. Make sure you check all the dealers close to you.

They seem like a good complement to the PS4S's. |
