Wait for LCI?
So I have an order in for a 2022 BMW M340i Xdrive, but my salesman is telling me at this point should consider waiting for the 2023 model, which will start production in July. From what I can tell, will just be some cosmetic upgrades and idrive version 8. In your opinion is this worth waiting for an additional 4-5 months for?

There may also be fewer control buttons for MY2023.

Depends. It is this new age BMW we are discussing, and as you've probably seen their updated takes on their vehicles, both existing and new platforms, are "polarizing" to be gentle about it. Sure you'll be in the latest and greatest, but you'd have to see how much that means to you.

Big question: Are you buying or leasing. If you lease, definitely not worth waiting. If you buy, see my comments below.
Despite what anyone might think of the LCI changes, rarely do the pre-refresh models hold more value than the re-freshed ones. So, if you are going to keep it for a while (ie: past the next change) then probably not too bad to go ahead and buy. If you plan to keep it just a couple of years, I'd certainly consider waiting. Despite all of the dislike for the new 4 (which I don't understand as I think it looks fine, good even), you are not going to find a new four selling for less than a comparable previous 4. Not quite the same as more than a re-fresh, but the grill change is more polarizing than some interior changes. |

If you’re buying, the newer tech in the refresh might get you a couple more hundred bucks when you eventually resell the car, but is that worth the wait? The decision should be more about whether you prefer the refresh changes. Newer IDrive is probably good but likely loss of physical HVAC buttons (and others) could be a negative. Also consider the likelihood of summer being over before you take delivery of the refreshed model. You’d be missing your new gadget during the fun months.

I ordered a 2022 because I wanted the physical climate buttons, don't need a larger screen, and don't think the new headlights/bumper look as good as the current pre-LCI... at least from what I can tell from the spy shots.
I also ordered laser lights on mine with the shadowline pkg and think they are some of the best looking headlights from BMW at the moment. I can't stand going to touchscreen for climate control/heated seats. I know it will always be at the bottom of the new screen for quick access, but it's just not for me. I've tried it in other vehicles and I find it annoying. Plus, I hate fingerprints all over a display. However, I do like the look of the new large curved display/iDrive 8 Just my .02 |

I personally am waiting for the LCI. I plan on keeping
My M340 for at least 4-5 years and it makes sense to get the LCI as I plan on buying it upfront - no finance or leasing. The interior from what we know so far is polarizing - But we wont know for sure till we see the launch shots if the Dual screen has been integrated better than what we saw in the i series. If youre not in a rush - I suggest waiting since the refresh is always going to maintain more long term value than the pre LCI. |

I need a car sooner rather than later. I could inconvenience myself with a wait, but I don’t think it will be significant.
I’m a long time driver, having bought my E46 in 2003. Not sweating a facelift. If the 2023 makes the M340i steer like my E46 then I’ll be sad.

For me the current G20 is one of the best looking BMWs in years. It's a matter of taste, but I think very few facelifts look better than the model they replace (with E46 LCI and Porsche Boxster 987.2 as exceptions). Designers have to make some visible changes while keeping as much as possible of the underlying car, for cost reasons. Hence resulting design changes look most of the time as an afterthought.

Debating if I should place an order on a 2023 M340 or get a 2018 M3 for a similar price? Which would you recommend? I have always wanted a M3 but I also do like the newest tech as well and the idea of having a new car and being the first owner.

Do you go to the track? If not you won't be getting the full feel or benefits of an M car. The F80 is as fast as the current M340 on a straight line but if you plan on doing track days that's where the M3 will blow the G20 away but how many people actually do that? Most M car owners don't even track the car. Ride is also harsher in the M if you like a stiff ride.
