Comfort Access & Ferry Travel

Out walking the dogs this morning, mulling over random crap, I was thinking about all the times we’ve travelled to Europe, Ireland and the Scottish isles with a car.

All my previous cars were simple enough, leaving them with the motion sensor off either by the key fob or an option shown on the driver display.

I’ve got a G21 and a G22, only the G22 has comfort access (plus, I think).

Easy to find in the menus for motion sensor off or a bit more to it with comfort access?

Owner's manual, p102 (for the G21 anyway):

Quote:
Switching off the tilt alarm sensor and interior movement detector
Within 10 seconds of locking the vehicle, press the button on the vehicle key. The indicator light illuminates for approximately 2 seconds and then flashes again. The tilt alarm sensor and the interior movement detector are switched off until the next time the vehicle is locked.
Does require a manual lock (either with fob or door handle sensor) rather than just walking away from the car, of course. My preferred approach would probably be to do that then pop the key in a Faraday pouch (at least until everyone is well away from the car), no risk then of accidental unlocks / locks that might reactivate the sensor.

Garage List
When using the Ferry back to the UK I've found that even following the manual and using the double press I still return to find the red link blinking oddly indicating it was triggered.

No idea if the horn was sounding.

Yeah, I’ve lost count of the number of cars that their alarm is going off as soon as the ferry sets sail, mostly BMW’s

I’m off to Arran in a couple of weeks, though it’ll be the muttmobile G21 we’ll be taking so not such a long crossing for a test, but we’ll probably start touring Europe again soon, that’ll mostly be in the G22, we usually cross from Newcastle, so overnight

The latest version of the app alerts you if the alarm goes off. Why that wasn’t there from the very first version who knows - seems like an obvious thing.

That’s great, however you can’t access the car deck once you’ve set sail

Sailed last week on a very rough Irish Sea. Locked car using fob and pressed ‘lock’ again within the required 10 seconds - alarm light went constant red for two seconds indicating interior alarm and tilt sensor were disabled (all as per manual quoted above). No evidence of alarm going off when I returned to the car.

Same experience with my wife’s F22. Ferry to Mull, tilt sensor disabled as per manual and no activations. Her car has comfort access like my G22 and fairly confident will be the same or very similar alarm system BMW fits to both vehicle variants.

Yep, same for me doing La Havre to Portsmouth. Shame I forgot doing the outbound trip so returned to the blinking red light, could hear my alarm in the corridor by the cabins. oops.

Luckily the fob works through a car ferry bulkhead, if anyone was wondering.
