CEL P05B0 but working active shutter grill?
Hello all,
New (to me) ‘20 330i Msport package threw a CEL two days ago. Took it to autozone to have ecp read. By the time I got there, it cleared. Yesterday, it hit again. Had a scanner this time. Plugged it in and got this code. I can successfully clear the code, removing the CEL, but it seems to consistently come back on. I’ve observed the grill, it 100% opens. Though I’m not entirely sure “what” signals the motor to actuate and open, it is fully operational. For anyone that may be so gracious enough to help, I live in San Diego, Point Loma to be exact. Weather is generally 75 all day so no extreme heat or cold per say. Any ideas? Or past experiences? Thanks! |

There are 2 sets of shutters, have you checked operation of the lower set?

Yes. From what I can tell the lower set is working fine as well. The ONLY thing I’ve noticed could be that the lower two shutters (L & R) don’t open quite as much as the others…but it’s maybe by cm’s, if that.
Are there any troubleshooting or bypassing tricks out there?? Edit: Just kidding. The lower two shutters on the lower grille are just flopping when the other ones open up. Any fix tips? I don’t think replacing the motor is it, maybe new shutters? |

Its possible they are just jammed or out of track, ive seen talk of rocks causing it. As far as i know however its meant to be replaced as an assembly with the bumper cover removed. Im not sure if you can remove underbody shields to maybe gain better access to the 2 flaps.

For anyone who’s interested.
Bottom two shutters on lower grill were the culprit. They were intermittently catching the “nub” of the shutter assembly and only throwing a cel when it attempted to close because of the resistance it sometimes met. I finagled both of them back onto the nub and super glued it on. Problem solved. No more cel and more importantly no cost. 🙌🏼 |
