Break in oil change

My cay just pasted 1200 miles. As in any of my new cars always change. the oil. then again at 5k. Since the 340i is a lease ,I get free oil changes for the life of the lease. But BMW telling me that oil doesn't need to be changed until 10k.

Are you guys changing the oil after the 1k mark and doing every 5k? Or are you just waiting until 10k?

I own my M340i and not leasing so your call I guess if you think it needs it. I did change the oil just past 1200 mile break in period and glad I did. I did see some faint specks of metal shavings and fairly dark oil. Since I own and want to have this engine running well for a long time, I’m doing 4-5000 mile intervals on oil changes. You can see my post and some photos from first oil change just past break in below.

Yea, will do now then again at 5k. Then will bring to the dealer for the 10k change.

Since I purchased my G20 and use it as daily + track, I change oil every 5k during daily use and change before+after track days. Relatively low cost to do oil change for peace of mind and risk mitigation.

I'm glad I did a bit of searching and found this thread including the link for the shop manual - thanks to everyone for that! I'll admit that if not, I would have been a bit perplexed hunting for the oil filter canister lol. I never would have guessed that the engine cover and all would have to be removed to access it. I've been doing oil changes on all my BMWs since the 1970s, but my F87 M2C is the newest before we bought the M340i a few months ago. Just add the canister location to the long list of Fxx and prior models to Gxx and newer step changes. At least it's not like the canister on my 1972 Bavaria where you removed the bolt from the bottom and it proceeded to empty its guts everywhere as you tried to get it out as fast as possible (BMW updated the M30 engine oil canister design to a top bolt for the E12 and newer cars).

Our M340i has just over 3k miles on it now, and it's well past due for getting that initial oil fill out. I'll post back after changing it this weekend. Hopefully all is well. We followed the break-in procedure. I bought the change kit from FCP Euro using the OE BMW oil even though I don't like the thought of 0W20 in the summertime here in SC. At least this car does not see track or autocross time like the M2C.

Decided to take a quick look at the oil filter housing today on my 2024 M340i just to get an idea of the change process...this is by far the most convoluted location for an oil filter housing of any BMW I've owned all the way back to my 1972 Bavaria (which was actually worse lol).

It looks like it is a very tight fit to pull out the filter canister with the intake manifold over part of the top of it. Is it as tight as it looks (and as messy as it seems it might be)?

It's quite easy. Stuff some rags around it to catch any drips.
