Hi guys,
New to this forum. Ended up here after some googleing since my brand new 2020 330d touring xdrive m-sport seem to have the same wind/road noise as described in this thread. My perception is that the noise is coming from the right hand side foot well. My car is on studded 18" 224/45 tires and is equipped with acoustic glas. I do not belive the noise is from the tires since my previous car 2017 330d xdrive m-sport did not make such a noise on studded tires. The noise varies with speed. The noise is noticeable from about 50 km/h and up, around 130 km/h it starts to get really annoying. I hope someone will find the cause of the noise. I will be visiting the dealer next week and let you know what happens. |

It seems like we are a bunch of guys that all have the same problem. Do we all have the M-Sport version with M-Sport brakes and Sports transmission?
I'm just trying to find a pattern here ;-) |

Morning..
So, I've noticed the wind/grinding noise is also present in idle now! I opened the hood and it sounds like its comming from the area around the turbo! I have recorded it on a video. Turn your volume up to hear it. https://photos.app.goo.gl/io5RrdzR235YY76W6 |

Very good find, also the video, thanks!
Although I doubt it is the turbo itself, as in my case the pitch of the sound stays the same regardless of revs, also the volume is pretty much constant. I am very curios now what could be the culprit. And I'm starting to worry that this might be considered by BMW as a "normal" engine sound (though I hope I'm wrong). |

I don't think that mine noise have something to do with the engine. I'm quite sure that it has something to do with the transmisson or bearings. I can't hear it when the car stand still.

I can't really hear the sound in the cabin when holding still either. But if I pop the hood I have the exact same noise from the engine from outside. Wether this is a "normal" sound from the engine or infact the culprit we are looking for, I'm not entirely sure of.

I have had a talk with my dealer and my tire guy, the dealer acknowledged the noise and is willing to take the car in for troubleshooting. Their first action would be to try a different set of tires.
My tire guy who sold me my studded Continentals said that is not uncommon for tires to need a break in period before they quiet down. He recommended me to run them for 3000-4000km before any other troubleshooting. Hopefully the run in will be enough, I will try that first and report back in a couple of weeks if the noise hasnīt gone away. |
