Touch up paint
Went to apply some touch up paint to a couple of small chips on the bonnet today. Cleaned , sanded (very fine grit) then wiped down with IPA. Dried of the area and made sure it was dry before applying the touch up paint. (BMW touch up paint) with a very fine artist brush.
Problem: The paint just would not adhere to the chipped area it would not cover it at all. I really tried and it did mark up the surrounding paint but the chip did not fill in at all. It was like it was repelling it. Anyway.....cleaned it all off with some compound using a D/A sander and got it back to how it was before I started. Any ideas why it wouldn’t adhere to cover the chip..... do I need to prime the aluminium?

Thanks for the response.....
It is hard to say if it is down to the metal (Aluminium) it just looks grey/black which I thought might have been the original primer....

I've used chipex on mine and it covered the small chips on the bonnet no problem, the BMW one probably needs a primer and lacquer to finish properly

Yeah I'm happy with it, second car I've used it on. Deep chips need a couple of coats but it's easy to apply and colour match is good. I had one at the back of the side skirt which is completely gone and a couple on the bonnet which are hardly visible now, I'll try and get a close up when I was it

I've got a primer, paint and lacquer kit and have done a couple of chips on the bonnet, but it was time consuming and the wet sanding to finish is a bit of a pain, followed by polishing back to a good finish... the Chipex system does look like a good option and pretty user friendly...

Ok seriously looking at the Chipex product for these small deep chips on my bonnet.
As stated earlier in the thread I had no success with the BMW touch up paint Any advice?

Must admit that I've found Chipex very variable. Certain colours work better than others.
I've now found that the best option for me are the cheap touch up sticks with the ultra fine metal tube tip, so you can feel the chip precisely then subsequently polish with a DA.

I tend to find the BMW touch up paint rather thick and the brush too large. Must admit that I am now a convert to these needle tipped touch up kits as it's like using a cocktail stick and you can direct the paint exactly where required.

No primer needed. Build up the chip. I do dozens a month on client cars. Don't try and fill it in one shot.
Apply super thin, dab it in with a Q tip, let dry fully add more and repeat. Then you can lightly sand and polish. |
