The journey, and another…… M340D!

My most recent journey to get to this.
For a little context, I change my cars A LOT! Also, when I say a lot I really do mean a lot.

I moved from a 2019 Audi RS5 across to 2019 BMW, the 330i M Sport. Unfortunately I had an issue meaning I kept the car a couple of months and got rid of it, this soured my taste with BMW. Although owning a car for 2 months is not uncommon for me, I changed because I felt I had too, not that I wanted too.
From here it was then the 20’ RSQ3, 70’ A3 Saloon, 21’ RS5, 21’ M340D, and now back in the 19’ RS5!

Unfortunately, it’s an expensive bad habit I’m trying to break. I decide to get a diesel which for me I prefer (each to their own and I valid all opinions) as I travel around the UK. I then miss the sound and roar of a petrol performance and go back to the RS models. Then after a short period of time I soon realise (for the 10th time ) that it costs a fortune to run and I want/need a diesel again.

Anyway, without boring you all - I’m saying out of all my cars I think I can ‘hand on heart’ say that the 21’ M340D is one of the best cars I’ve owned!

I justify this by:
Diesel 60mpg on my journeys
X Drive
Best comfort out of all my cars
Best feel of the car, light and accurate steering
Loved the look
A lot of tech

These are just some of the reasons, yet I was silly enough to change back to the RS5 because after watching YouTube, I missed my original sounding car so bought back the RS5.

Well, having got rid of my 2021 M340D I have just purchased the new M340D! I know some will argue WHY, it’s a diesel etc…. But for me it’s perfect!

I’ve gone for a grey which I have never had before (always buy white), it comes with comfort plus and tech plus so pretty loaded. I personal want the new IDrive 8 (even tho some hate) but I also wanted to spec my own but didn’t want to wait a year; either way it’s now gone from the configurator. So I found this at a dealer and have done the deal.
I’m missing the carbon pack and laser lights but hey, we can’t have it all unless happy to wait and I’m impatient. Regardless, I’m also extremely happy! I’m hoping to collect next week

Moral of my story……… we all crave these high performance cars, yet sometimes the ones that don’t shout turn out to be the best in todays market. Hats off to BMW, I have never missed a car like I did the 340 and so glad to be getting another.

And here's me thinking my guitar habit was getting expensive and out of control!...I will use this thread to evidence to my wife what could be if not guitars.

Agree though, several Golf R's later, but finding the M340d Touring i have now is perfect for me and all the car i could want (or need).

Enjoy the M340D when you get her

Enjoy.

I am still amazed at the economy I can get out of my M440D - without even focusing on it. Economy that would be quite simply fantasy a decade ago for a large displacement engine with over 340 PS.

When coupled with the lazy torque and electrical assist it makes for truely frugal, effortless, rapid transport.

100% mate! Roughly, it’s £37k since 2019 in loss by changing. Would almost own a car outright by now

Was wondering what the cost of all the changes would be, thanks for telling us. At least you know the cost of your car buying habit...

Just on you're laser light comment - the LCI doesn't come with optional laser lights now. The visibility pack is now just high beam assist and selective beam assist.

The 340i and 340d do come with this as standard from memory and according to the current online configurator, so essentially you should have the 'best' headlights available to the LCI already.

Oddly enough your photo doesn't seem to show the blue accents that are the tell tale sign so maybe it hasn't appeared on your build?...

I don’t, or at least try, not to think about it. That’s the issue with keeping cars a few months or less. The RSQ3 was £55k, 3 months later sold for £47k to WBAC, then checked nearly a year later out of curiosity and it was worth £54k with loads of miles….. should have kept it after all…… just the car market since Covid.

The RS5 I have now is my exact one I purchased brand new, same reg plate!! Small world. I sold it with 2k miles on the clock for £49k. I just bought it back 5 weeks ago for £52k with 20k miles
Now selling for £46k so there’s 6k loss in 5 weeks

Anyway, we all waste money on different things, that aside I’m buying this M340d brand new so I’ve gotta keep it!!!!

Hiya,
Interesting point this one, but when I first looked at buying one I did the online configurator and it was an extra! You had to buy the visibility package.
I thought the blue accents were laser headlights? Either way, not on this build for some reason

I’m going to email them tomorrow for a spec sheet, if possible? Be interesting to see what’s listed.

On the pre LCI the blue accents did feature on the laser lights along with the different daytime running lights. The LCI however has more minimal visual differences between the standard LED and the ‘visibility’ LED headlight.

Apparently the low uptake on the laser lights was a major reason for dropping them on the LCI. That coupled with the cost and the fact I imagine 90% of people don’t even know how to activate them. I know at my work three other guys didn’t know you needed the high beam assist on for laser lights to work.

Perhaps they have only come standard with the 340s after your build date. They are forever tweaking options these days.

Bloody hell! And here's me questioning my sanity changing after 15 months!
I feel even happier with my decision now, thank you for that!

Don’t worry about no lasers, the new LED’s are matrix tech and way better than the old lasers 99% of the time.

The way they react to traffic (the dancing lights/selective beam) is night and day better.

Lovely looking car.

I’ve recently moved to an LCI 340i and it’s more than just looking a bit different.

It drives quite a lot better, I’m pretty surprised at the difference.. Idrive 8 is great now I’ve got my head around it and Harmon/Kardon could be all new for how much better it sounds than before.

Just got off the phone to the dealer. They have confirmed that the new models come with adaptive LED headlights as standard. Apparently on these models the 'blue accent' is no longer around the top half of the bulb, its now a thin blue strip at the bottom of the bottom of the headlight. Example here I quickly put together:

Name: G20 Lamps.jpg
Views: 986
Size: 30.1 KB

I also questioned if was I going to be missing anything due to the shortages of semiconductors and was told on these latest models nothing is missing as its new to market and BMW are ensuring all equipment is as it should be. They did state that they believe this will potentially become an issue next year and builds might be adjusted where they leave out the HK, or wireless charger etc......

I had Matrix on my RSQ3 and loved the lights, essentially what looked like full beam all the time and you see the lights adjust around cars and constantly changing, incredible really and great to experience/use.

How do BMW work? Surely its not on full beam otherwise they would have lost the 'high beam' assist function? Can't seem to find anything online saying Matrix or maybe they avoid that phrase?

Really good to hear mate.
I know people seem to hate the iDrive8 but personally its one of the reasons I bought the new model - I wanted it

I understand the argument it looks like an ipad slung onto the dash, but its not terrible imo, but then again I love my tech so actually excited about getting it.

Anything you could add worth noting? Quite straight forward, responsive/fast?

Final question - what are your online purchase options? Before I purchased High Beam Assist and Traffic Camera detection. Assuming its the same on these new models?

I’ve not checked the online purchase stuff tbh.. there’s nothing else I feel like I need.

Idrive 8 has been flawless, it looks great and suddenly dates everything else.. found the sport displays the other day.

Picked up Friday and what a dream to drive! Such a lovely car and absolutely loving the iDrive8. In my opinion, it’s so much better than the previous, easy to use, responsive and big! It’s great.

Where are the sports displays? I’ve gone into what I thought was everything, but can’t see? What am I missing?

Very interesting to read this as I totally agree on the diesel. I had an M4 and M3 comp 5 or so years ago and had a bad Experience so stepped away from BMW similar to you.. But had a 330d loan car when my M3 was in the garage and loved it..

I now have a M340d on order that is just about to go into production, really looking forward to it after having a number of cars such as a W205 C63 (which I loved) RS3, Range Rover Sport and a 2021 F-Pace SVR.

Enjoy your new car, looks great!!

You need to have it on ‘adaptive content’ in My BMW, and then either of the Sport modes.

I bought an M340d during covid, so was delivered to the door without even a test drive. I have done 20,000 miles on it now and can't believe the fuel economy I regularly get, 50+mpg on a 120mile round trip commute. I had a 10 year old 330d MSport before and this averaged around 42mpg on the same journey. Then bang it into sport mode and it is a different car dragging in the horizon. Still feels like it could handle more so maybe consider a trip to the tuner to dig out another 50 bhp and similar torque improvement. I wouldn't want to trade away the current fuel efficiency so would need to be switchable.
