Good to see those vents are functional and will be used to push snow/slush/ice right into the perfect candidate areas for corrosion.

What will these designers think of next.
Efficientdynamics is not just by chance

Pretty on-brand for Bimmerpost to first pull out the pitchforks because there are no more functional side vents and then pull out the pitchforks because there are functional side vents again...

I think it has more to do with the fact whether or not those vents are truly beneficial enough to highlight it as a feature. Remember, BMW did the same thing with the pre-LCI F32/F33/F36, they highlighted the vent only to remove it on the LCI. I don't think anyone truly cares whether it's there or not, just don't market it as something beneficial and then remove it. Clearly it wasn't really needed on the F3X and it was more for aesthetics with the "Bimmerang".

2022 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe Spied Looking Production-Ready, i4 Teased
Quote:
BMW is arguably the king of niche models and the 4 Series Gran Coupe illustrates Bavaria's modus operandi to slice segments into tiny pieces. It's a 3 Series Sedan turned into 4 Series Coupe, only to get the rear doors back, keep a coupe-like roofline, and add a liftgate. The Audi A5 Sportback rival is getting a new generation in 2021, and these latest spy shots reveal it's almost ready to break cover.

Our spies got up close and personal with a production-ready 4 Series Gran Coupe riding on small wheels with winter tires. The test vehicle represents a lower-spec variant of the swoopy liftback as the circular exhaust tips denote we're not dealing with the M440i variant. Looking at the side profile, stickers resembling conventional door handles do a terrible job at diverting our attention from the new flush handle design not shared with the 3 Series Sedan / Touring or the 4 Series Coupe / Convertible.

Moving at the front of the car, it's a familiar look as BMW will largely adopt the same styling we've seen on the two-door 4er. That obviously includes the love/hate grille with active flaps that open and close automatically, depending on the level of cooling needed by the engine. Images of the interior are not available in this set, but the cabin will likely be virtually carried over from the 4 Series Coupe.

The 4 Series Gran Coupe lineup will include the usual gasoline and diesel engines, all the way up to an M Performance variant. The M440i is expected to use a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid tech for a bit of electric boost and fewer emissions. It will be good for 382 horsepower (285 kilowatts) and 500 Newton-meters (369 pound-feet) of torque.

Separately from our spy shots, BMW has released a couple of teaser images depicting the i4, the 4 Series Gran Coupe's fully electric counterpart. It will largely inherit the design of its combustion-engined sibling and reportedly spawn a hot i4 M50 xDrive derivative as the closest thing to an M-branded fully electric 4 Series.

While the i4 will be an addition to the 4 Series family, BMW is expanding the 3 Series lineup as well with the launch of a first-ever M3 Touring. These two new arrivals are expected to break cover sometime next year, allowing the German marque to offer even greater variety. Also in 2021, the wraps are going to come off the M4 Convertible.

oh man, they continue to butcher the 4 series

i had the f36 GC, it was a beautiful 4 door coupe. This G26 is more of a GT than a GC. Theyve lost what was previously a sleek low down 4 door. I am not sure why anyone would choose this over a G20 3-series now..

Is it just me or does the grill look better without the trim around it? I think the lungs look better separated, like on the M3/M4.

I have to agree, aside from the heinous front end (compared to the new 3) the appeal of the F36 was a sleek, low four door coupe. The G26 looks awkward, bulky, gone are the elegant lines and Very similar to the old 3 series GT (that was a minger too). Why anyone would pay more for an objectively uglier and less sporty looking four door saloon is beyond me, the 4 series GC was thought to be niche when it first came out but sold very very well, I think this one will be another hard product to shift, their is just no justification for its existence in this form.

The F32's were also functional. This is no different.

The f36 (the gran coupe) it was functional until the LCI update at which time they blanked them off for some reason. On the LCI F36 they are just just a piece of trim with no function, so it's interested by they might be re-adding them....

Ah...

On my pre LCI F32 mine were functional. I remember stones getting stuck in there constantly.

Because hatchback versatility and functionality versus an antiquated trunk is more important than a minor or unimportant change for some in aesthetics. Also, there is no such thing as "objectively uglier". Aesthetics is 100% subjective.

Ok the answer to the functionality question is
Simply to buy the G21 Touring, if you need a functional boot AND a car that's not got a heinous front you'd just by the 3er estate (or even better the Alpina version).

You are absolutely right re: My objectively uglier comment aesthetics are indeed subjective.........

but it is ugly. and the vast majority agree, just look at the forums, the poles etc. The g80 m3 & m4 forums have more threads dedicated to what ELSE people are going to buy because of the looks. At best the people with a vested interest try and excuse it away, talk about the tech and how advanced the car is. come on dude be honest with yourself.

In a BMW showroom in the US, the 3 or 4 Series choices will be the sedan, the coupe, the Gran Coupe, or a X3 SAV. We have no station wagons...I need to go to Volvo or MB for one of those, if I liked their cars, both of which I've had in the past. If one wants a BMW here, one must live within those choices. I'm not interested in a tall SAV and rule out the inefficiency of a trunk or a 2-door. That leaves the GC and is likely the appearance I will find with the electric powertrain of the i4 in that same body.

I am already being completely honest with myself. I just have different values that do you. I have been happily living with my Grand Touring, which many others avoid due to design. Who cares? For me, the functionality wins over by far. I can put my bike inside one day or a full load from a Costco trip, or all our luggage on the way to the airport on another. Also, I am being honest with stating that I do not care what others think about how it looks, nor consider "majority rule" in deciding such subjective issues. I may have years ago...but one grows out of that kind of externally-derived esteem.

Well said Sportstick. I do believe that some on this forum and others like it forget that subs like this are the minority of BMW owners not the majority. Now could enough pushback on aesthetics cause BMW to change the looks? Possibly, but likely not happening anytime soon. The grille thing is at this point becoming senseless rhetoric. Imo there's been enough posts/talks about it that for those that don't like it simply move on instead of joining the peanut gallery.

Are we certain that the G is not as low/wide/sleek as the F? Is this subjective judgement based on spy photos or are there published specs showing that BMW raised and narrowed the GC?

Not an unreasonable assumption until proven otherwise, as they may improve interior rear seat/cargo room to effectively blend the past GC and GT into one.

I see it as the opposite. I see BMW being surprised by the success of the 4 GC and not messing with a good thing. I don’t understand why there is this feeling that they would ruin it by merging it with the very unsuccessful GT.

Are there any reported dimensions that support your negative hypothesis?

I don't think that would "ruin" it at all....I see it as improvement if there will be more room inside than the current small GC interior rear space. I'm fine with the sheetmetal being shaped to accommodate that improvement.

My input was from conversation with an "unnamed source". Sorry I can't go further. Ascribe credibility as you deem fit.

The mojo behind the 4GC isn't space or utility, it's coupe-like low/wide styling. For those bored with the 3 sedan it was a breath of fresh air. Dad can drive his sexy coupe again and the kids are small enough to not complain because they have the all-important rear doors and the rear area isn't cramped to them.

If you want a GT you can have a GT. BMW makes so many body styles in the SAV/SUV/utility segment there is a ton to choose from. The GT is not a 4 door coupe which is what is exciting about the GC. I hope to hell they don't ruin it by making it an obese turtle like the GT.

Your feelings are likely shared by many, but not all. There is another group of buyers who need to be considered as well. Those who don't want a tall utility vehicle, no longer can get a station wagon from BMW, but want the versatility and cargo capacity of a hatch. The passengers in the back are no longer kids. They are adults. Exterior design is a less compelling reason for purchase and almost anything from BMW falls within "acceptable". We don't buy them for style, we buy them for the driving experience, just as we did when the brand was far less well known.

There is another point that I'm sure you must realize. BMW has a few Gran Coupes in the showroom. Only for the 4 Series were they willing to accept the increased investment, variable piece cost, and weight - all negative factors for any OEM - to include a hatch versus a conventional trunk. This is because they understand that a significant number of buyers in the midsize market also seek utility/functionality. Not as necessary or affordable on the 2 Series GC below or as desirable/needed on the 8 Series above. The 4 Series is not just all about someone trying to be "sexy".

Sometimes the 'driving experience' is simply that the car looks good. Especially for the typical 4GC driver who is 40+ with kids and an SUV looking for a sportier version of the 3 Series he's driven since forever. Wants a coupe, has kids, the 4GC is a dream come true.

The majority of what you're wishfully projecting on the new 4GC is spot-on identical to what the GT is. BMW makes a lot (too many) utility vehicles as it is. Gran Coupe's are their fun cars. The 4 Series is their fun series. The GT was a weak seller. I can't see BMW ruining their edgy 4 Series GC of the future in a bad attempt to make it into another (yawn) utility vehicle.
