Dead subwoofer m340

Just picked up a new m340 like 2-3 weeks ago. Running into an issue where the subwoofer is dead when I turn on the car after driving a bit.

Went for a drive, turned off car to get gas and then after filling restarted the car, the subwoofers are dead.

They also only cut off when starting the car so far and they will stay dead unless I park the car for some time. Restarting idrive or quick restarts don’t fix it.

Sounds like the amp.

Is this a common issue? Dealer couldn’t reproduce the issueso they didn’t fix it last time. Trying to narrow down so I can get it fixed.

Had it happened like 6-7 times within the 2-3 weeks I’ve had it already. Such a disappointment.

Had this today in mine. Seems like the rear speakers went out too. Seemed to be good after the car went to sleep Try holding the volume knob in for 30-40 seconds to reboot the head unit when it happens. Hopefully a software fix coming soon.

Bumping this thread because this just happened to my M340i today. Ambient outdoor temperatures are very cool (50 deg. F), and others have said that this is not a cooling problem with the amp. Probably some sort of safety cutoff after high usage. I did have some bass-heavy music going at about 40% to 50% volume for a while. Found a thread on the 2-series forum, but not much else. It does seem like a known issue with HK amps in other BMW models.

Anyone else with a G20 experience this? FWIW, a hard reset of iDrive did nothing. Had to shut off the car completely (let all electronics go into sleep mode), wait 5 minutes, and then restart. Worked properly after that.

I've been experiencing similar symptoms since day one. In let's say first 5 minutes after radio is on there are regularly some cut-offs or better say crackles like the power input/amp has some troubles. I'd describe it as crackles on old LPs or something similar where first volume goes up and right after it there is a drop in volume with a kind of old-fashioned crackle. It also rarely happens but still enough frequently to be annoying while driving after this "first 5 mins" time period. It's for sure not related to a sound source as the issue is present both on radio or when playing music from internal storage. During 5 months of ownership two or three times subs were completely dead and I had to wait 30-40 minutes with locked car untill it got fixed (car went to sleep mode and only this fixed the issue so that the subs operated then as normal). This happened immediately after I had turned the radio on so without any (heavy) load or possible overheating. I spoke with a friend of mine at dealership who sold me the car and they will most likely change the amp under warranty.

Same issue here with my 11/20 build G21. Reseting iDrive didn't help.

Known issue. Replacing amp did not resolve my issue https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1#post27051581

Would appear this is a systemic hardware issue (many faulty amps, even replacements) or software.

Mine got magically "fixed" after I left the car parked overnight. We'll see if it happens again

It will. It is a random occurrence. Putting the car to sleep and starting it usually fixes it temporarily.

For me the issue seems to occur shortly after startup only, and it seems to be impacted when other electronics are being activated - for instance when the lane departure system detects something, opening or closing sunroof/shade, activating buttons like sport mode, or when braking/accelerating.

Once I have been driving the car without shutting it off for a 5+ minute period it seems to occur less frequently, and I can't think of a time it cut out after driving for longer than 30 minutes.

Anyone else have it acting up similarly? Or is it pretty consistent regardless of drive length?

I was referred by a BMW tech to PuMA no-65463809-01 with an updated amp part 65 12 5 A38 AB8 with AI-02 revision index.

This replaces the amp part 65-12-5-A20-7E7 which appears to have some kind of systemic issue.

I had originally had my amp replaced with another 65-12-5-A20-7E7 and the problem reoccured yesterday. Brought it into my service center with a video (as best as possible) and the PuMA measure # (they couldn’t look it up as PuMA seems to be deprecated in the U.S.) but looked up the part and saw it replaces the A20-7E7, so agreed to order and try it. Will report back.

Are the subs the only 2 speakers driven by the additional HK amplifier?

No. The amp powers the entire system. But when it fails to initialize properly it will drop to the equivalent of “5-ch stereo” with no logic/surround and low range reserved for the subs.

Today they replaced my amplifier as well, and the mechanic said it was a new part number for this one. He seemed quite sure the amp was the issue.

We'll see if that solved the issue.

Well, the new amp with the same part number has died again. I brought the service advisor a copy of the repair issue with part numbers and links to where i found it. I asked them to just look it up. I hate to Karen on them but it's a pain in the ass to continue going to the dealer for the same issue.

Mine went again after about 2 months of being fine.

It was on the way back from a round trip of a 3 hour total ride. It seemed to happen more when I got the car in september...

im assuming it just over heats and shorts out.. going to call the dealer today.

It's not overheating , there's a hardware fault that means the booster doesn't receive the correct power signal in certain conditions it wake itself up and power on / off

The new amp/booster will be arriving in the US within the next week or so. I have several customers waiting for it and I feel terrible because they're brand new M340s. :
