Kindness thread

What have you done that has improved someone's day recently? What generally nice thing have you done and felt good about? It can be as simple as "I let that guy through an intersection" or as big as "I donated $40,000 to X". No act is too small. Talk about it here! I'd love to see your stories.

This isn't passive aggressive, I really mean this. I didn't see one in searching, so why not start one?

I'll start. Bought diapers for a local abuse shelter after hearing a friend's story.

I let someone in traffic from a parking lot.

This is significant for me because I don't let people out because of past Fuquery. I'm a work in progress.

Shoveled my neighbor's sidewalk as well out of boredom (and the fact that WFH has me at less then 1000 steps a day)

I like the Hasselblad in your avatar. Medium and large format photography is a pretty cool, though very expensive, hobby.

I have expensive taste in cars AND cameras. lol

Thanks! My obsession with them relates to space, and here's the nerdiest picture I've probably ever taken, and yes, that medal did come from Space Camp:

Nicely done!!

When I was in HS I had a Nikon F2 and though it was absolutely amazing...until I handled a Leica and, later a Hasselblad. It was a revelation. Photography was a hobby which got me lots of phone numbers but I never did much beyond learning how to develop B&W and color.

I'm a freelance product photographer. You've probably seen my work without ever knowing it if you're in the US. I LOVE automotive photography but I'm just not that good at it.

I'm a Canon DSLR guy, but Nikon film all the way.

Very nice! I have a Nikon DSLR now.

What product class, if you don't mind me asking?

For Giving Tuesday a few weeks ago, I gave $100 split between Wikipedia and three local not-for-profit organizations. I have also donated at least $100 each to two local hospitals in 2020, and $250 to the college student emergency fund where I work. These are in addition to my annual 4-digit philanthropic donations to not-for-profits.....

Very nice, and good for you. So many people expend a lot of hot air proclaiming that they're "for" various things, but they don't put any time or money into them.

I co-founded a small not-for-profit performing arts center in 2009. My mom, at my request and in lieu of a Christmas gift to me, gave them a $200 donation in my name. And I've been covering their lease payments during the COVID lockdown, since they haven't had any ticket revenue.

What I realized in Mexico is that while I would love to help everyone, I simply cannot. This must be how God feels. I’m sure he would love to help ALL that are in need but he can only do so much. Oftentimes we ask “why them and not me?” and I think that’s probably how He feels too. I felt so bad about a lady who sat on the steps of a church all day selling handmade crafts. It was late at night and cold and she was sitting there with her kid trying to make a living. I gave her some food. There was a lot more cases like that. Thinking about it now still makes me sad.

I advocated for and was successful in convincing our CEO to pay out holiday bonuses to our remote contract support staff in Manila. They work their asses off and many have never received a Christmas bonus in their life. One of my employees cried when I gave him the news. It was really fun to spread some cheer and joy yesterday given that the other 350ish days this year seem to have been filled with nothing but bad news.

Donated $30 in gift cards for some families to buy Christmas presents for their kids.

Bought 2 of my reports at work breakfast and coffee last week for no reason. Side benefit is I get coffee and breakfast too. This one is karma neutral 😉

Had another one from a couple months ago. Came back from a hike in NY with the Mrs. Saw some Honda in the lot with headlights dim and thought that sucks... As we left the lot the guys had come back and were talking about walking back up to some campground to get a ranger to jump them. It was already dark, I had cables, so we took the 10 mins and got them going.

We adopted a couple families this Christmas. We do this every year, but this year seemed more meaningful.

We get Christmas ideas from the families (through a church), and go out and spoil their kids rotten. LOL

I heard it best from one of my most influential pastors throughout my church career, “no one can do everything, but everyone can do something.”

Whether that was original and authentic to him it matters not. It had an impact on me and I have done as many somethings as I could since. It seems you have as well.
