Mirror Cap Choice

Currently in the market for a set of new mirror caps. I am in between the below choices:

- IND G80 retro kit / painted in Alpine white
https://ind-distribution.com/collect...g2x-3-4-series

- AUTOID carbon fiber M style
https://autoid.co/collections/bmw_g2...is-g20-g30-g15

I know both products above will be of good quality just curious to know which option you might select and why.

How do you know they will be of good quality? I've been looking for carbon fiber mirror caps for awhile and can't find any that would be of quality below 600 or more bucks.

Every person I have spoke with who has or has had carbon fiber component(s) from AutoID has been thoroughly satisfied and impressed with their dry carbon. Most of the cheaper carbon options are manufactured using the wet process, not the dry. For $600 you can purchase a set from BMW.

I literally went down this path today. I just purchased a set of OEM shadowline ///M mirror caps from a G8x forum member, but also had to order the support rings to make them fit G20 platform. Ordered from getBMWparts.

Right support ring - 51-16-8-746-848
Left support ring - 51-16-8-746-847

Eventually I will be ordering dry carbon G8x mirror caps from AutoTecknic. I had their M mirror conversion III on my F30 and the fit/finish was spot on. https://autotecknic.com/collections/...-m3-g82-g83-m4

-IND will most likely be your highest quality 1-stop shop without breaking the bank if you want Alpine White. I have purchased painted parts from them and the quality was perfect. I think the AW will look awesome and got my vote.

-I have never used AutoID, so can't speak from experience

Then there are these retrofit kits as well. Not to take away from your original question, just throwing out some other options.

-OEM M Mirror retrofit with carbon caps - $$$ https://www.bmwpartspros.com/p-bmw-o...kit-bmwg8xcfmc

-OEM M Mirror retrofit with primed mirror caps - $ https://www.bmwpartspros.com/p-bmw-o...rofitmirrorkit

AutoTecknic retrofit kit - Gloss Black only https://autotecknic.com/collections/...s-g22-4-series

I actually just received and installed my g80 retrofit kit from ind a few weeks back and have to say I'm blown away by the quality, you won't be disappointed. Paint is absolutely perfect, not a single dust nib or spec in it and an exact color match to black sapphire metallic. Can't tell any difference from factory paint.

Install wasn't too bad but getting those clips off was pain as always. One thing though, I put a little too much pressure on the mirror taking it off and my mirror swivel (what the mirror clips into) came partially off of the motor. Didn't notice until I put it back together and my mirror didn't move anymore. To fix it I had to take the mirror back off, take the motor out, take the swivel off the motor and put it back on correctly, then reassemble. Don't do what I did lol.

Was unsure if I liked the g80 design over a standard mirror cap but after getting them painted and installed I definitely do. I was debating carbon as well but not totally sold on the carbon look with a black car. And once you get one carbon part... you need them all haha

I swapped the G80 mirrors onto my G20. Obtained the caps and rings and had them painted at the local dealership and IIRC shaved 80-100 bucks off the IND price.

I did get painted reflectors F&R from IND and can attest to the great craftsmanship on their end. It really boils down to price vs convenience.

Appreciate all the details and corresponding links! The dry carbon option from AutoTecknic definitely perks my interest more than the BMW carbon option; just can't justify spending double for basically the same product. I have a few IND related components currently and I can attest to their quirky - not to mention they utilize actual BMW components vs aftermarket. My only sticking point is painted vs CF???

Fully understand and I agree. Tough decision for me as well. Painted looks great as it color matches with the car, but so does CF since I have alpine white.

Lol - you are correct, once you start with carbon you tend to continue with carbon

I remember there being a thread on this very subject - can't remember who all posted within; I'll need to do some searching since all the associated part numbers were listed within.

Agreed - I also have the front and rear painted reflectors from IND and their craftsmanship is superb.

Do you by chance have any pictures of the mirrors on the car?

I have a set of the AutoTecknic G8X M Inspired style mirrors installed and can vouch for the quality to price ratio. Now looking at the IND OEM conversion, I'd probably go with that route now if I could go back in time.

I wanted the OEM carbon mirror caps, but $1,900??!! The carbon diffuser for the M-Performance diffuser/bumper trim is less than 2/3 that cost. Dumb. :/
