Hi Dave

I guess you are saying the economy is better but the power delivery is worse, is that correct?

No, I meant both are much better for both models, than the previous gen models. With the greatly appreciated low torque electric boost, and the engine off coasting for better economy. I always found the 435D felt less smoothly torquey than my preceding 430D S-Drive. The M440d is lovely in low rev, fuss free torque.

However.... The mild hybrid is constantly switching the engine on and off at low speeds and in stop/go traffic, which is still perceptable (though much better than before). With lots of little micro-pauses as the electrical fill kicks in before the engine restarts, and gearbox re-engages.

The brakes also balance regen braking with real braking, as the gearbox is simultaneously engaging/disengaging making braking very inconsistent sometimes. Sometimes fine. Other times snatchy feeling, like a clumsy learner driver too heavy on the brakes.

These effects seem less pronounced in "adaptive" mode. You actually get the gearbox dropping down and regenerating as you approach junctions/roundabouts - traditional engine braking. In "comfort" if you are on a slight decline and lift off the throttle as you approach a junction or roundabout, the gearbox disengages and you can actually speed up!

I understand why some might use the "sport" modes to retain standard, engine-on retardation and braking, without the (admittedly slight) stop/start pause.

I get the feeling that "comfort" mode is default primarily to get the great headline economy/emission ratings.

I'm hoping that better programming will improve this technology.

On the flip side, getting 48 mpg for city driving in a heavy, 3 litre straight six with 340 hp and 700 nm is witchcraft.

Dear all
Thanks for taking the time to respond to this post.
I’ve ordered the m440i :-))))
I drove both and couldn’t really make a bad decision.
Worked out it’s going to cost me an extra tank of fuel a month and with the amazing deal I got on the car - It should be affordable :-)

Good work. You will love it I'm sure.
Best engine I've ever owned by miles.

Nice choice. I'm so glad I picked an 840i over the diesel. The B58 is a really special engine!
