Trackers for insurance purposes

Hi,

Getting my M340i next week in Newcastle, UK, and wondered if anyone else has been requested to add a approved tracker for insurance purposes. If so, what have people gone for....?

Regards

Mark

I have not had any request for a tracker for my 320d but it does not surprise me these days on anything "performance" related has a tracker...

https://www.trackstar.co.uk is recommended and approved by BMW as far as I can see.

What I don't get is that for the vehicle locator to work in the my BMW app it must have some form of tracking that is presumably built into the car and difficult to remove?

So why doesn't that count as a tracker? Maybe it doesn't work when the battery is pulled?

The tracker in MyBMW I suspect only works with your mobile phone and it there just to let you find your car if you have forgot were you parked it...and like you say will disconnect if the battery is disconnected.

A proper insurance tracker is independent and linked to a centre and the Police... not saying that the MyBMW could not be adapted to work that way if BMW chose too do so.

Find another insurance company. I didn't need one and tbh once it's been stolen I'm nit sure I want it back.

I deliberated with an immobiliser instead but eventually chose neither.

To be honest, I'm only staying with my current insurer as I have 4 months left on the insurance and the uplift wasn't too bad compared to my previous Audi. When it comes to the renewal I will certainly change.

When speaking to the insurer, I did mention the myBMW app and that you can track the car via the app. She confirmed with a colleague and said that was ok and not once did she state insurance approved tracker.

I was 2 years with BMW insurance, and on the 3rd year they suddenly requested a tracker to renew. So I switched to Aviva.

Any Thatcham approved tracker should be valid for insurance purposes, just go for the cheapest IMO. I agree with a previous post, I am not sure I want the car back once its stolen.

Yeah, I decided to cancel and also went to Aviva. Far far cheaper and no tracker nonsense

Ahead of collection (Saturday just gone), I insured M440i with Admiral last week and there was no request for a tracker.

(Admiral weren't the very cheapest of the quotes I had but the cheaper ones were black box policies (not happening) or companies I've never heard about and a bit dubious about.)

Wasn't asked for any tracker or any other additional security for my insurance. But it was ridiculously cheap, like £250 a year (maybe £300 at most).
