BMW M President confirms G80 M3 leaks, car won't be released until 2021

Moderator: Please note that the statement in the article text,"the new M3, which looks like it will escape the controversial new ‘big mouth’ grille", is the author's own misinformed conclusion. It is not a statement that Flasch confirmed nor even commented on. In fact, to the contrary, as SCOTT has said on more than one occasion and reiterates again in this thread, the M3 will indeed borrow the grill from the 4er/M4.

BMW M boss confirms new M3 is production-ready but is still more than a year away

BMW M president Markus Flasch has confirmed the new BMW M3 is ready for production, as indicated by a leaked shot of its rear-end last week, but says it won’t be released until 2021.

Speaking with carsales during the 2019 BMW M Festival at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa, Flasch confirmed the both the new BMW M3 sedan and M4 coupe will go into production in late 2020, before their official launch in early 2021 – meaning both core M models remain more than a year away.

“The [M3] pictures didn’t leak on purpose,” he said. “I mean, the car’s ready. It’s a pre-production car that leaked.”

Flasch offered no reason for the significant gap between prototype and production for the new M3, which looks like it will escape the controversial new ‘big mouth’ grille design of the next BMW M4 Coupe, as previewed by the polarising Concept 4 show car at Frankfurt in September.

But the BMW M chief did confirm reports that both the M3 and M4 will be available in rear-wheel drive as well as all-wheel drive forms, and with both manual and automatic transmissions.

“We haven’t officially confirmed it, but I can tell you we are very likely to offer rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, manual and automatic for both models,” he said.

The engine of the new M3 and M4 has already been previewed by the BMW X3 M and X4 M – a new 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline six that 353kW/600Nm in standard form, rising to 375Nm in Competition spec.

In a way it doesn't make sense as S58 engine is done and X3M and X4M are released. Now whoever wants the S58 in a sedan or coupe have to wait until 2021 two years later.

I guess I won’t be able to replace my F80 with the new M3. Oh well, my money will go somewhere else. Was waiting for the new M3 but I’m not waiting another year or more. I started test driving 19 Nissans GTRs as they are in my next budget and 2017-2018 AMG GT-S. Love the AMG GT-s, what a car. Thank you BMW for making this easy for me.

Nice to have a confirmation that the leak is the real deal of a car that’s ready. A bit of cold water on those with M3 plans. I’m getting the M4 this time so while I had hoped for a late 2020 launch the news here aren’t such a big deal.

It doesn’t make much sense though, having a ready car and wait a year for launch. Every day a model is off the market is a day of lost sales.

Xdrive and a manual is great news, if true....

No way, this is true, it might mean a 2021 Model Year, with deliveries Summer 2020.

That’s how I read it too, however Scott26 has indicated that we should “soon” see official pictures so I’m not 100% it covers the full scope of his “garbage” comment.

With these clickbait sites I only take as fact the direct quotes. The other stuff they just piece together or rip off some other clickbait source. The comment about the grills being a perfect example.

When does bmw ever give timelines for launch publicly. The direct quote was that "the car is ready." AND @Scott26 mentioned in the other thread that press drives of prototypes (as is now bmw custom) are happening soon... take from all that what you want

I did read this as xdrive and Manual combo being close to confirmed, at that was a direct quote, language barrier non withstanding

maybe ill get a X unit next year to hold me over, ill see. I really really do enjoy driving the M340 though that car is awesome. Im excited for new leaked photos and also released photos to slowly start to come out over the next year.

then again you never know with BMW, could come out sooner then we think

OK, I am at peace w the grill. Guys if its ugly IND distributions will hook me up.

If the brakes suck, IND will hook me up w a nice set of Carbon Fibre Brembos at only 30K. If suspension sucks, Schimer Racing will hook me up.

If power is down a bit, Pure Turbo and ESS will hook me up.

All options on board, they are saying it will escape the big grill. So here we go.

All Set, I want it in RED.

BMW for life.

Damn, I thought this would be late 2020, and I could hop into a new lease when this one is up in early 2021

Might as well leak it as we know more or less what it looks like. A G20 with fender flares and body kit. And quad exhaust with S58. Not like anyone is going to steal this design and call it there own. Seems a long time to wait considering the pace of innovation lately.

That's my thought as well. Maybe they will come to their senses. I just couldn't lay down M4 money and look at that front end every day.
