I was surprised how much value I’ve lost in my car. I own a 2011 335i with sports pkg and it would barely get 10k according to NADA which we know that the dealers don’t use so it would be less than that but it gives me an estimate. I then checked the 2011 Lexus IS 350 similarly equipped and it’s valued at close to 3 or 4 grand more than my car according to a Sept 2018 orange cover little NADA book.
It appears (long term) that Lexus holds a higher value than BMW why? |

The car was purchased CPO so I was never affected by the first year depreciation. I bought it when it was 12 months old.

BMW will probably never match Japanese long term reliability. Most buyers of cars over 3 years old want and need reliability and nothing can match Japanese reliability sadly!! Also I doubt whether Lexus discount their new cars as heavily as BMW do... |

Japan, inc automobiles made in the 1990s enjoyed great reliability. I don't believe that is the case with their 21st century breathen. Never had any issues with my 328i E90 in 7 years of ownership, other than scheduled maintenance. There are BMWs with 200K, 300K + miles out there. Just sayin'....

I had various problems with my e92 a few years ago... admittedly the fact the coils kept packing up would have been down to Bosch (who probably have them made in China nowadays!?) but then the cat needed replacing... thankfully all within warranty! Didn’t put me off BMW at all tho and my e90 & two F30s haven’t caused me any problems! I am in the fortunate position of being able to replace my cars once the warranty period ends tho which helps! We can only really go by the big reliability surveys which are carried out yearly to gauge a brands overall performance in this area and here Lexus are ALWAYS at the top... I’d still never buy one tho |

Remember the VW tagline, “If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen”. Many folks bought into that perception of reliability, was nothing like the reality for many VW users. The deep intake of breath from some, when discussing running older BMWs, "They are a minefield", "better be prepared for big bills", etc. Add the idea Japanese cars are the most reliable, a lot of truth in that viewpoint, but not the whole story over time, as we know. Hard to change opinion once it seems to be set in stone. Prices will be influenced by on going opinion and perceptions. |

BMW on the other hand is out in front pushing the envelope in engine, infotainment and chassis technology. That said my 2015 M3 was built in the 1st month of production, is now in it’s 5th year and has been rock solid. Then my early N54 car wasn’t the same story, great progress sometime comes with an initial reliability cost. |
