well there is a 2.5% tariff on EU made cars. Theres no tariffs on mexican ones because of NAFTA / USMCA or .

All else being equal it makes sense they'd move as much to mexico and south carolina as possible for US market. I'd rather have a mexican made car with less transit time and 2.5% less. Honestly I'd rather bmw even keep the money than the government get it.

Interesting indeed, M340's now being built in Mexico. I don't think that will dissuade me from getting another one. Provided quality is no less than the German built one.

Reminds me of the kerfuffle when certain markets got the E46 generation from South Africa over Germany. In the end, the SA cars had lower quality control and fewer warranty issues over those that were made in Germany.
I think you meant better/higher quality control in SA. SA BMW plant has won many quality awards for fewest defects.

I had an E90 SA build and that car was fantastic.

I don't think that's an accurate indicator. My South African built F30 starts with a W...

Shouldn't matter anyway, any BMW factory has the same quality control and tech. Plus I'm sure the good people in MX are very proud to work for and build BMWs.
It's accurate... the 3 series didn't start being built in San Luis Potosí (Mexico) till mid 2019, around June I believe. The 3 on your VIN on your F gen may not be accurate, but on the G20 it is. 3 for Mexico, W for Germany.

Also I understand if they are proud to build BMWs, yet if I'm purchasing a German car, I prefer it made in Germany . Once you start outsourcing builds, you sometimes do see quality control issues.
SLP MX builds are not outsourced. This is a BMW plant, same as any other BMW owned plant.

Yeah "lower quality control" meant "fewer issues during production"

I agree with what you said

I ordered a Sunset Orange M340xi and it took my dealer about a month to be able to get an allocation for it. I am in North Carolina so I guess I got one of the few xi allocated for this area.

I wanted an xi as there is just enough snow and ice (which I get more often than snow) to make me get it.

Any idea on total xdrive numbers? Should we still expect a delay in getting allocations or are they starting to become more common?

Reviving and old thread...

I am trying to get a better sense of M340i allocation availability. My CA advisor is saying that the allocations for the next month will be released the last week of the prior month. He currently does not have any allocations for a M340i and I'm not very interested in a huge wait as I can easily work with other dealers in my area (of which some are very high volume and I suspect more likely to get an allocation).

He's also telling me that having an order in the bank will help with the chances of an allocation. True?

For those that have recently ordered, can you chime in on your experience getting an allocation?

Also, I also had another well known CA (and the one I purchased my 2012 335i from) tell me that there will be no more M340i builds from Germany (for the US market). Sounds plausible, but from what I could gather there are (or at least were) some allocations for German built cars but they were more limited when compared to Mexico builds. Can anyone clear this up?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered an M340i on 9/7. German build due to color selection. Dealer had no allocations for Germany. Was told that a "sold" car was likely to receive an allocation earlier. Finally received a call in December that BMW had given them an allocation for the following week of production. The car was similar, but not the same. We managed to change the build at the last minute to conform to our requested specs. Car is currently on the way to Charleston for PCD delivery.

According to dealers in my area, all US bound 3 series are produced in Mexico with the exception of individual paints that are only produced in Germany. Dealer had Mexico allocations when I ordered and several more before mine went into production in December. You are more likely to get an allocation if you stick to the standard paint palette.

Also, 3 series model changes (LCI in BMW speak) generally start production around April or May (minor changes front and rear with major change being the i4/iX type of instrument panel display).

I have an MX M340i xDrive that has finished production and is waiting to be shipped. Ordered last week of November, built first week of January. We only had 3 MX M340i allocations beginning of December. We have submitted 1 M340i Germany order, but allocation has not been filled. The Germany build has been pending for about a month... Pretty sure almost all NA 3 series production will be coming from Mexico.

There is definitely a chance BMW could fulfill an order if submitted in the order bank, but no guarantee...

Interesting. The LCI in April or May would be sooner than I expected. I read somewhere it would be in July, but I am very turned off by the iDrive 8 interface so not interested in a MY2023 at this point.

I got lucky with a modifiable xdrive allocation in Topeka KS. Started looking at pricing and went through a rewards program at work. Only dealership participating in my area (Wichita KS) was the topeka one. They automatically got my info when I looked up an m340 and sales guy called me within 45min. Said he happened to have the modifiable allocation and it was mine if I wanted to move forward. Rest is history. Built and ordered 3 days later. Now the loooong wait begins.

This is an old topic. Original/early M340i's were only built in Germany.
