Normal especially when ordering. Usually it becomes non-refundable once the production number is provided.

My dealer said they wanted "additional deposit" for non refundable individual paint and to be honest, keeping in contact with them they didnt even bother asking when I moved over from IOMG to individual. Seems like if they take you serious/you have an open line of communication there is less of the weird trust issue thing. Although, one of the DFW dealers tried to ask for 5k deposit and I told them that was insanity

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I hate the fact that states like CA have chosen to babysit people entering into written, signed agreements. Sure, make it a law that absent any specific language then the deposit must be refundable. But if you sign your name to an agreement that says "NOT REFUNDABLE" in no uncertain terms (as I have done before), then that should be the deal. If you are too stupid to read the language, or have some other extenuating circumstance after the fact, tough shit, why should the dealer get stuck with the bill because of your stupidity or unfortunate set of circumstances? Maybe they will choose to refund anyway because of your history or your "posture", but if you order some dumb ass config or make a bad decision in life and then can't follow through, it shouldn't be their problem automatically.

Literally a law school topic is the way Bank of America and Wells Fargo handle slip and fall cases. BoA pays $20-30k for them to go way. WF will pay $50K in attorney fees and risk a big loss. Slip and fall 'professionals' know this. I have banked with WF since law school.

Here in SoCal we also have CarMax. I sold my 11-year old 2007 SLK55 to them for a surprisingly good amount ($4,500 more than my dealer was offering when I bought the 2018 C63s). When I was ready to sell the 2018, CarMax offered slightly above KBB but the dealership I used for service beat that by $2k.
When I bought my 2024 my dealer gave me KBB on the 2022 so I took a trade-in for the first time in my life.

I think if the dealer has an allocation and you can verify this or you are doing an individual paint, then they usually want a non refundable (non-enforceable) deposit to make sure that you are serious. If you are comfortable with that then there is no harm. If you think the dealer is sleezy and lying about the allocation, then move on to someone else. At this time the G80/G82 allocations are much easier to get if you start shopping around. I had to pay ADM and a non refundable deposit as I had an open allocation in 2022 when the demand was crazy and the wait times were 9-12 months !!! So its all relative
