I don't want to ignore you, nor anyone else. However, when you make a bold remark and one without any evidence to support it, it bothers me. Others could be reading through conversations like this one and have no idea who is saying what and where that information is coming from. So if you have any evidence to support your points, I'm all ears. As an example, someone (I don't remember who) stated that the '20 MY M340i is quicker than the '21 model. I asked where he had heard that and got nothing. I cannot find anything that suggests that is true. Now I know it wasn't you that said that, but I'm giving an example of something that needs to be proven accurate if one is going to make such a statement. Honestly I'm also curious whether you are considering buying an M340i or if you have test driven one even. It certainly comes across as you not being interested in a new one (MY 21) because it's not a "pure ICE" car and will likely be built in Mexico. |

That's the biggest annoyance with the mild hybrid...yes it smooths out the engine start/stop feature, but it doesn't allow you turn it off (which I would want to do regardless of how seamless it was). Especially when you have an exhaust, it becomes very noticeable when the engine starts and stops.

Bimmercode cannot it is only for changing functionality of certain things in your car (no seat belt chime, turn off ASD, idrive screen settings add items like that) great app but does not make any changes to your engine. You can download the Bimmercode app for free and run it on demo mode on your phone to check out all it can do. I used it on my M340 and a couple others and really like it
To get crackles/pops you will need, a currently unavailable thanks to DME lock, flash tune by someone like Carbauhn, Dinan, Mission Performance, MHD, BM3 to do that. A piggyback like JB4 also will not work. |

Just for interest - BMW still makes MY2020 M340i's for certain markets like South Africa and Malaysia (where it is assembled in CKD/SKD format).
It's called model homologation. Germany produces both MY2021 with 48V MHEV and regular ICE only MY2020's on the same line depending on the destination. Same with the BMW X3 plant in Rosslyn Pretoria. It will fit both the 2.0d engine with 48V for certain export countries, while locally we only get it without the 48V running production change. Cheers. Great cars no matter which you have. Understated. Underrated. Stealth weapon of note. |

Bmw only limited 2 software controlled features 1) fake pops and crackles are reduced, these are software induced anyway. IMHO this is a significant improvement as the 2020 sounded completely fake. Even the most overcammed big block could never overrun enough to produce that amount of pops. (You will also notice no car in the lineup, incl the full M cars had that many pops) 2) reduced cold start volume (flap controlled) |

I test drove and 2021 and it left me feeling like it was missing one of the biggest components of the car for me personally. I dont believe the change to be due to regulations, so that only leaves it to complaints or the fact when they realized the G80/G82 wasn't going to sound that aggressive. With that said, I have nothing against the 2021 I just with they had an option for people to turn the exhaust more aggressive for those who might be into that |

I'm sure they wouldn't have done it if the general feedback wasn't negative. While I don't understand why people liked it (pops and crackles), it's certainly fine they did.... best thing would have been adding as selective feature to idrive |

And let's be crystal clear about one thing, this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the performance of the vehicle. Personally I couldn't give 2 shits about popping or burbling from my exhaust. If I wanted that I'd have gotten a modded Civic. Let's say it's more stealth if need be.
I agree that it has gotten blown way out of proportion. PERFORMANCE is what matters to me. As far as I'm concerned this '21 M340i is a beast. |

It would be nice to hear BMW explain why they changed this. Im pretty sure I know why but it should come from the source. Sneaking in the change on people causes the disappointment some have had. Me I don't care but many do.

2020 just sounds so so sweet - if you want the pops and bangs leave it in sport+ and if you're not in the mood put it in comfort and it quiets right down | 2020 for the win (again) | a rare beast for numerous reasons | always said I would never buy a first year BMW again but in this case so thankful I did

Perhaps they deemed it too played out since every crap box now has the crackle and burble thing by way of aftermarket tunes. 90's jetta's , crap box nissans you name it. Also, nothing as subtle as what's on our 2020 MY's, just loud and obnoxious. I went to a BMW drive last year and got a headache driving back with all the old E90 cars with the loudest burble tunes. It's the new rice -mod these days....

I just like that we can turn the exhaust note on or off, so we truly can go into Stealth Mode at will. And to anyone that thinks the '21 M340i is slower than the '20... lol. They're either the same, or the '21 is a bit faster due to the mild-hybrid system... and even then, it's not noticeable. xDrive will launch from a stop much better than RWD, but at speed, it's a wash.
