Yes I felt this boaty and bloated feeling while test driving an F80 M3 years ago. I'm not a fan of cars that weigh nearly 4,000 pounds. Ended up with a OG M2. At least the M2 is smaller in length and drives smaller.

Yup, and coming from something that weighs 3000 lbs (996GT3), the M2 felt HUGE and heavy at first...wish the M2CS was under 3000 lbs and I wish BMW would make a real driving car for once...

Nearly 4,000 pounds? What F8X were you driving?

This time a M340 was also on the track. Interesting comparison with the M3 regarding gear shift sound.

The 340i sounds crap there. Yet everyone says they sound “better”

I, too, would like to hear the automatic equipped car(s) accelerate out of a slow corner.
It's not about how fast the downshifts happen. It's about *when* they happen. As you say, this all depends on whether BMW fine tunes the application to respond to driver inputs, or to change gear whenever it feels like (e.g. up-shifting when you lift off the gas, or mid-apex!)

Applying your arguments about 'who is the typical customer' for these cars, I can only imagine that this won't be set up for the few people who like the instantaneous shifts of a good DCT, but want to make their own gear choices. e.g. in those videos I don't hear a whole lot of aggressive downshifting under braking, I'm hearing occasional downshifts on the exit of the turn. (e.g. one around 0:35 seconds)
Maybe those portions of the 'Ring don't require aggressive downshifts. I'm not sure having never driven it. I remain hopeful for the DCT crowd.
The car is running really well in the video. I think we will not be dissatisfied or disappointed with the automatic transmission.

BTW, isn't the M8 automatic? And I saw a video of an M8 in a track and I loved what I saw!

Driving them back to back at Thermal Performance Center...they are night and day different...

The M3/M4s felt very easy to drive...will give it that but I don't like how heavy they feel (while they still hide the excessive weight very well)
M2 weighs about the same. What you are describing is the result of a shorter wheelbase. The M2 can rotate more easily, but sacrifices some stability.

Stepping up from a 340i and I felt the same way initially. The car felt bigger, but it was psychological. It weighed less than my 340i. I think it was due to the fact that there is a hood bulge and has a wider track. Physically yes, it's bigger, but as someone pointed out, it hides its weight well. It's hard to tell when going 45 on the street, but open it up on the track and you know where all the engineering went. The M2, which weighs the same but is smaller, handles much differently and is more fun to drive for that reason. On almost every track though, the M3/4 just has more power to turn faster laps. Tune a M2C and it's a different story.

So the M3&4 will come with up to 510PS / 503BHP so has finally caught up with the C63S.

Let's hope the weight has been kept down, as that's one area where the F80 scored over the Mercedes-AMG.

I'm holding off final judgement until I see it in the flesh. I was hoping this would be a daily replacement for my current E92.

Why is the majority of this video containing Porsches and a minivan? Lol I mean it's fine and all, the Porsche is more interesting than the bucktooth grilled M4, but still.

I find this sort of interesting....

I have noticed in many 'amateur' videos of G80s on the ring that I find myself thinking "wow, that sounds awesome", only to realize that the exhaust I was hearing wasn't the BMW, but the Porsche (or something more exotic) that was coming up behind it.

The "spy" videos that are carefully edited to have just the BMW clips in them I usually find myself thinking sound completely "meh!".

Perhaps BMW should interleave *more* minivans in the clips they post?

Am I the only one holding out hope for more colors? The palate we've heard about seems.... underwhelming? Although I am interested in frozen portimao if it's close enough to the froze blue on the current CS...

You're not alone! Tanzanite Blue is what I'm mostly interested in ATM, but I'd like a few more options including another interesting blue.

992 Porsche don't really sound that great either. It sounds like this new m3 will be on par with it.

Yea not crazy on the colors... Since I already had a Tanzanite F80 and Alpine White M2, I'm leaning towards BSM or even Portamao. I wish Silverstone or Hockenheim Silver were available.

Even in the AWD version of the G80, weight will still come in under that of the current c63s since it would be a rather massive fail if the heaviest version of the new M3 exceeded 4,000 lbs.
