I did the mod and I also highly recommend this!
Here in EU we already are punished when it comes to exhaust sounds. By doing this mod, the sound is awesome. The cold starts are loud, girlfriend immediately asked if I got a new exhaust. Also the neighbors asked about it since I leave at 4am for work... not appreciated by some of them. Normally the flap only opens (in sport or sport+) when idling or when you step on it... Now even driving at low rpm it sounds nice and there are way more burbles. Before they only popped from 3000 and up, now they are also there between 1000 and 2000 rpm. I dit it like TTG did. Some pics: Check if the flap is open. Unplug and use some electrical tape to protect the connectors. Use zip ties to finish it off . I uploaded 2 vids on YouTube, one with the mod and one without it, where you hear opening the flap at the end. Stock cold start Mod flap cold start So to those who are still not sure, just do it Ow, and I forgot to mention that this does NOT throw a code Last edited by Rednose_M340i; 01-07-2020 at 05:51 PM.. |

Is there a disadvantage of keeping the flap open all the time? Like fuel consumption? What's the purpose of the flap?

It probably has to do more with emissions than anything else.

i dont understand the advantage of deplugging.
isnt it the same when i press sports mode? the valve opens when i press sport mode and i have the same? or is the flap in sport not always open?! the only thing i understand is... when i deplug... i have the valve open in comfort mode. and i can not close by button anymore?! so it is in every mode same sound. |

And No, the flap isn't open in sport mode all the time and if you go purchase a MPE, it doesn't even have a flap. This is not a thread about what ifs..... it is to show people how to do whats commonly know as the "exhaust mod" Further, for those asking bunch of questions: Go unplug the darn thing, drive around the block, if you don't like it, plug it back in.

Putting it in sport doesn’t open the flap constantly.
Like I said before, it only opens when you floor it (above certain rpm) and when you stop and idle. That’s it. I thought the valve also stays open when you put it in reverse. Like TTG already said: Just unplug it and check it out for yourself, it’s just a “simple” plug that you can reconnect whenever you want. And yes in every mode the same sound, but sport adds more burbles, and sport+ way more. |

Not true about MPE. I have it and it sure has a flap.

Really? I stand corrected then. I just drove a M340 with MPE and did not see the flap. Is it still on the passenger side?
BTW, by any chance, did you drive your car around with an unplugged exhaust before getting your MPE? I had MPE on my F10 and it was the best best best mod ever. I was 100% planning on getting it for the M340 but after driving one with MPE, I can't tell that much of a difference and not sure if it is worth the $$$. M340 already has a pretty good tone and it sounds that much better when unplugged which somewhat doesn't justify the cost MPE (I can't believe I am saying this btw) Plus I have to keep the OEM exhaust around to swap back once the lease is up.....

Unfortunately I can't comment on anything without MPE since I ordered my car with MPE as a port installed option. On my F30 340i with the stock exhaust (later with a resonator delete) however I unplugged the valve literally a few days after picking up the car and I never plugged it back in until shortly before I got rid of the car. That car had an awful rattling noise from the valve if it was closed and the car was idling. I also didn't like how randomly it opened the valve. On the M340i it seems to be more of the comfort = mostly closed, sport = almost always opened so it's a lot better imo. With MPE I think the car is plenty loud but I might try unplugging it one day just to see what difference it makes in sport.

I'd like some clarification. On the M340, when you select sport(+), I can hear the valve open. Am I understanding that the valve closes at some point, and re-opens at another point?
Does it really open sometimes, but less frequently in comfort? Does anyone actually have any proof of this?

Yes correct.
I noticed that when I made a video when I was parking my car under the carport. In that video I start the car in sport mode and you can hear the flap open, when i start parking the car under the carport and come to a stop, you can hear the flap open again and when I turn off the engine, the flap closes. I will try to upload the video one of these days. You can always make a video yourself, then you have your proof immediately And I think I never heard the flap opening in comfort mode. |

How many stages does the exhaust flap have? I've noticed three distinct volumes of sound coming from the exhaust (Comfort, Sport, and Sport + (being the loudest)). I wish in Sport Individual you could select the exhaust mode.

The flap is open or closed.
The volumes and amount/frequency of burbles in sport and sport+ Modes are programmed. The exhaust can be triggered in “sport individual” when setting engine to sport or sport+ |

That's what I meant...how many volume levels are programmed. I just wish you could choose the "Sport +" volume when in individual sport.

Eco/Comfort = valve closed Sport = valve open Sport + = valve open and car programmed to cackle and burble more I configured my Sport Individual to be Sport transmission and Sport + engine. It seems like the Engine setting is what controls the valve position and the burble programming. If I change the engine to Sport it's still equally as loud except there are no cackles or burbles. Setting it to comfort closes the valve and makes it pretty quiet.

I have the M Performance Exhaust on mine so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I did the mod the other day. Only difference I notice is a louder cold start. Otherwise exhaust sounds exactly the same to me. I do drive around in sport plus 80% of the time though. Guess I need to look into MPE

If you drive around in Sport+ most of the time anyway you're obviously not going to notice a difference, because there is no difference. Only start up would be louder. This "mod" really only is useful for those that drive in comfort or sport (not sport +) but still want the full exhaust sound.
