This could indicate a potential fuel leak to the oil pan via HPFP or injectors. That's a plague of all DI engines.

According to the tech, turned out to just be that my oil was slightly under the amount the vehicle expected under normal operating conditions. I plan to keep an eye on it.

I've put in another 4,500 miles since my last service and I haven't yet encountered this again.

Also, I've been at Stage 1 tune from Mission Tuning for about 3,000 of those miles and Stage 2 for 500 miles so far.

So far so good!

:fingerscrossed:

Does anyone know if 0w-20 (LL-17FE) was filled in our M340 from factory? Could this factor in to the oil consumption with the B58? Could you guys having these issues state your driving style and the driving mode used each day?

Just trying to gather up quantitative info. Thank you.

You know I am thinking this because I added the 30w last time my car needed and mpg went down immediately. Therefore, as some say, the 020w is for fuel efficiency. I will monitor to see if my light returns again before the first oil change.

So I am at 7100 miles and Oil warning just came on again so this would be 3rd time. Pootie what would you suggest? should I take it in or just add another? First Oil change coming up in June per the car.

My both M135i and M2, bought as new, didn't move engine oil level at all. Just curious - how did you drive-in the engine?

I just bought a case of 12 quarts of oil from ECS because I know I'll be needing a quart every 2 months or so..

What do you mean by drive-in the engine?
(sorry I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but just want to clarify)

If what I understand is how I drove during the break-in period, I've driven the car very casually and coasted most of the time on the highway/local. But after the break-in period, I've been mostly really heavy foot. Considering how I've been driving the car, I didn't necessarily find the low oil to be too much of an issue because I'm pretty used to seeing this happen previously on my Mini. But considering this to be very widespread, I'm getting more curious now if this is something more serious.

Btw, after my last comment that I didn't receive another low engine oil light, I IMMEDIATELY got another one the day after. I might've just jinxed myself.

I know it's nerve-wrecking for this to occur on a brand new car but as I outlined before, at this juncture, there is only so much the dealer can do but document the issue, top off the oil and send you on your way. It's sort of a waste having them check it, unless they have something to go on like a CEL or some sort of physical oil seepage.

What's scary for me is when I added my first full quart, after the low oil indicator had now illuminated, it didn't even reach the MAX indicator. This motor just seems to guzzle oil..

Best you can do is religiously keep a close eye oil levels and possible create your own documentation (videos, photos, threads, ect), should this result in a mechanical failure, in the future.

I am sorry to hear this... I would have done the same thing to break-in the engine; I always follow the manual's recommendation and had good results. Now to hear that you need this much oil is concerning; I would take it in to document the issue as others stated.

Why don't you change the oil now and see what happens; the manual states that 0w-30 LL-01FE oil is recommended. I hope this issue resolves soon.

I will say the car is still a blast to drive, so this doesn't upset me lol. Hopefully it changes after the first oil change. This will be my final quart before I get the oil service done.

Without a doubt, the car is amazing and I love it! just saying...oil consumption would bother me though.

I understand your concern but this car is a lease and I have already been to the dealer the first time this occurred. They made me feel as though I was the clueless customer to not have known about this engine and oil consumption and that I can't expect this engine to be like that of the NA engines I was accustomed to in bimmers of the past. This was from an older female SA mind you.

I won't lose any sleep over this, car is all stock and shall remain that way. Thus if any issues develop BMW will have to take care of it. Life is too short for me to stress over this issue.

That car is a beast!

I'm sure it's a combination of the lighting-fast ZF8, which doesn't drop boost pressure during gear shifts, mated with an brunt motor that kicks likes a mule but it's damn impressive for a stock car.

I wish I had a conclusive understands of why it burns oil, for better or worst but I'm sure as the model progresses, more data will surface..

Sorry, my bad, I of course wanted to say brake-in. Well, maybe B58 engine behave like this. As you said, you have warranty, but I guess nothing will happen and oil consumption is for sure normal for some engines.

I don't know guys the oil consumption seems like an issue, I don't think it should be happening at this rate on new cars, especially in 2020... mine has not dropped a bit, are you guys letting your car reach operating temperature before driving hard?? Are you warming it up a bit before going.. cold climates?

Holy crap I thought I was just the only one at the beginning. Ok, I experiencing the same thing. I think the first time I had to fill the oil it was around 3k miles. I have now taken in the car a total 4 times. I don't think they can fix it. I think they just refill and send me on my way.

However I do not feel a difference in power. Just annoying that I would have to take it in so often. I will have to take it in again soon as it is getting low again.

Yes, I let it warm plus I live in warm south Florida. I have not even utilized the launch control on this car yet. So my consumption is definitely not from a abuse.

They did tell me this the first time I took it in. I will be coming up on the 5th time I will have to take it in. That is that they did the oil change the last time I took it in. So, there is definitely an issue.

You must absolutely make them document every time you take it in for this issue.
