German carmaker BMW plans ramp-up of production by end of April
Source: Xinhua| 2020-04-25 01:51:35|Editor: huaxia

BERLIN, April 24 (Xinhua) -- BMW Group planned to restart its production at worldwide factories at the end of April, as the COVID-19 pandemic situation improved, the German carmaker announced on Friday.

Initially, BMW's engine plants were scheduled to restart production on April 27 in order to supply the international production network, BMW confirmed to Xinhua.

With the Goodwood plant in Britain and "probably" Spartanburg in the United States, BMW's automotive plants as well as the motorcycle plant in Berlin would follow from May 4 onwards.

The opening schedule was based on market developments and customer demand. BMW noted that there were "some initial positive developments, but in many markets, uncertainties continue to exist."

In Germany, car production in BMW's largest plant Dingolfing would not restart before May 11, according to the company.

"Depending on market developments," BMW's remaining plants in Germany and South Africa as well as the MINI plant in Oxford, Britain would gradually resume production on May 18 "at the earliest."

In China, the plants of BMW's joint venture BBA in Shenyang had already resumed production in mid-February. "We see a positive development there," a BMW spokesperson told Xinhua on Friday.

Germany's largest car manufacturer Volkswagen as well as Daimler had already restarted production this week at selected plants after around five weeks of shutdown due to the coronavirus crisis.

BMW plans to gradually ramp up production by mid-May

Munich (Reuters) - After Volkswagen and Daimler, the third major German car maker BMW is now planning to resume production in Europe.

From next Monday until the second half of May, the engine and automobile plants in Germany and Great Britain as well as in the USA, Mexico and South Africa are to start successively, as BMW announced on Friday. The group would have to cope with production losses of up to two months this year. BMW announced the first production stops in Europe on March 18 and sent 20,000 short-time employees in Germany.

"The exact dates of the restart are based on developments in the markets and customer demand," said a spokesman. In addition to the first positive developments, especially in Asia, there are uncertainties in numerous markets, for example due to repeated changes to the opening regulations for car dealers. In close cooperation with the suppliers, BMW wanted to ensure that the factories were supplied smoothly.

BMW begins production at the individual locations with one shift. The plants usually work in two or three shifts. To protect employees, hygiene and clearance regulations are made and processes reorganized.

The engine factories will start on Monday. The automobile plants are to follow step by step: On May 4, production is scheduled to start in Goodwood in the UK and in Spartanburg in the USA. On May 11th, things are set to start again in Dingolfing, Bavaria, and San Luis Potosi, Mexico.

Finally, according to BMW, the plants in Munich, Leipzig, Regensburg as well as in Oxford in the UK and in Rosslyn in South Africa will follow on May 18 at the earliest. The crisis-related production stop partially overlaps with planned interruptions to conversions. Preparations for the production of the fully electric BMW i4 from 2021 will be prepared at the Munich main plant.

In contrast to automobile manufacturing, BMW had continued component production in Germany to maintain auto manufacturing supplies in China. The situation in China, where production restarted on February 17 after a corona-related interruption, is developing positively, according to the group.

Volkswagen and Daimler had already restarted production in the first German plants in April after several weeks of forced breaks due to the corona pandemic.

I hope they have adequate supplies because if they run out of parts sourced from China or elsewhere in their supply chain then the lines won't run for long.

Have to agree with you sadly... I think we have quite a substantial amount of economic pain to come all around. I was planning on a new car later this year, but with all the uncertainty around, I think I'm just going to stick with what I've got for a long time to come.

Customer demand... I ordered my X5 in July last year and it's still not produced. It would be nice if they would produce current orders first. There are many people waiting for cars ordered last year.

Holy... Dude, how much room do you have in terms of negotiating a lower price or simply canceling the order altogether?

None, I live in Belgium, Europe.
I think Spartanburg produces first for the US market. And if they have some capacity to spare for the Belgian and European market
This is a ridiculous long wait.

This is a ridiculously long wait. How many allocations does your dealership get? 1 per year? What engine trim did you order?

I hope they're only doing customer orders for now. Can't see the urgency for BMWs right now.

I'll bet those waiting on orders will be first priority, if not the only. Hope you get your auto soon, July is a long wait indeed.

Plugin hybrid 45e From a rather big dealer with enough slots I would think. I know orders placed in October and delivered end of February.

I hope so. The car was scheduled the week Spartanburg closed. So hopefully they start where they left off.

Suppliers are ready for the new orders..
Their ramp up phase will be done according to the new demand...
Unfortunately the drop in sales is affecting massively the entire automotive chain!

That's insane. I ordered two X5s in late December and they were delivered almost exactly one month later. They haven't even started building your X5 yet? That seems super unfair.

Unless it is a rare X5M, you might be better off just getting an X5 on the lot. Dealers have tons of X5's.
