The government has rightly decided that we should stay in our homes.
Probably for months.
I’ve ordered a CTEK charger and I was wondering if I could charge the battery via the cigarette lighter.

According to BMW data, no. Used to years back, but not with the latest energy management. Recommended you use the under bonnet charging/connection points, as this uses the IBS in the circuit.

I'll see if I can find a reference.

From BMW 'Battery Basics'.

Quote:
Charging and trickle charging of the battery

...If the battery is charged when fitted, the charging process must take place via the jump start terminal point. This is the only way to ensure that the charging process is detected correctly by the vehicle electronics on vehicles with an intelligent battery sensor (IBS). If the battery is charged directly at the battery terminals, misinterpretations of the battery condition and, under certain circumstances, unwanted Check Control messages or fault code memory entries can occur. The cigarette lighter is supplied with voltage by the front power distribution box via switched terminal 30B. After terminal 30B off, the relay de-energizes. This means that a trickle charger connected at the cigarette lighter would be disconnected from the battery. Only charge the battery via the jump start terminal point.
Most user manuals also contain a warning not to use the 12V sockets.

With the lack of running, due to covid restrictions, I’ve just hooked mine up to my battery charger. Should help when we eventually get back out and about.....

I bought a CTEK MXS 5.0 for my Porsche Cayman.
Looking at the instructions, it should be good for the 320i.
I haven’t tried it on the BMW yet.

I have used this model on 435i, E92 M3, F15 X5. Audi TTS and my present G20 330i. No dramas at all just make sure you set it for AGM and you will be good to go.

Before I read your post I started to charge the 330i.
Not knowing what type/make of battery I had I set the CTEK
to Normal battery program
This program includes ‘many AGM batteries’
The AGM option is for charging ‘most AGM batteries like Optima
and Odyssey’
I hope I haven’t damaged my battery.
What make of battery does BMW supply ?
I’ve not looked in the boot floor.

I have never used anything other than the AGM setting. Looking at the charging profile the normal setting charges at a lower voltage than the AGM setting for the ‘bulk’ period otherwise it is identical so I would think you are going to be ok.

BMW state no more than 14.8V for the AGM batteries.

CTEK MXS 5.0 is fine in AGM mode, 14.7V. 14.4V in normal mode will not damage the battery, alternator system is working in that range, in normal charging.

Got an “extremely low battery” warning in the car yesterday probably due to lack or use. I therefore ordered a new battery charger that will do agm batteries as my current battery charger is not suitable for cars with start/stop batteries.

I've been using the CTEK charger than I use on the Nomad - just alternate it between cars every few days.

Def on AGM mode for the BMW. The battery in the boot says AGM on it.

Anyone any recommendations as how to charge the battery if it is not in a garage?
My 330i G20 stays on the driveway. Wouldn't be a fan of removing the battery. Gave the car a 20 minute on Sunday but still showing low battery.

Buy one of these chargers and run an extension lead out to the car. You slide the extension lead under the car, plug the charger croc clips to the terminals and place the charger under the bonnet with just the mains lead going to your extension underneath. Drop the bonnet down, lock the car and apart from the lead no one would know.
