I custom ordered my m340i.

People were getting better % off msrp on lot cars, but the lot cars all had piles of crap I didn't want like a lot of drivers assistance packages and leather etc that I don't care to pay for.

I also wanted a car with summer tires, and tanzanite blue paint, which basically doesn't exist on dealer lots with minimal options. So I think I still probably ended up with a good price given I didn't have to take a bunch of random options

Just curious - Are you a RWD order from Mexico or a Germany build? Below is the timeline I posted for mine in the tracking thread. All said and done it'll be about a 3.5 months start to finish for me to get the car delivered in New England.

I got my M340i off the lot. I was looking for best lease deal in my area. I believe I achieved.

I have owned a LOT of BMW's. I always order my cars. I enjoy my cars and I want what I want.

That being said, the only car I took off the lot was an impulse buy. I had taken my 5 series to the dealer for an oil change and there was a Jerez Black M3 (2008) sitting in the showroom. It was just talking to me lol.

We pulled it out of the showroom and took it for a drive and I was blown away by the sounds of that glorious m engine. Incentives were plentiful and the money factor was right so as the oil drained from my 2 year old soft, overweight 5'er I made the decision to make a change.

As they prepped the M I took a loaner home to pick up Owen, then 10. Driving home in a new car is always more fun with a copilot. I didn't say a word about why I needed his help, but the smile when he saw the new ride all shined up at the dealer was priceless. The manual shift was a new toy, and we drove all the way home with his hand on the shift with mine over his.

The downside to all this lack of planning was that we had to empty the trunk of the old car, little league gear and all, into the brand new car. Come on, you all know for the first 6 months there is a 'keep the car unreasonably clean' break in period. The no eating in the car (for the kids) lasts until the first time we drive by shake shack... damn those fries and malts.

That Sat morning was the ONLY time I purchased a car off the lot.... As I sit here thinking how slow that damn boat is crossing the pond with my Tanzanite blue M340.

Got my 330i M-sport out of dealer inventory. There are some options I wanted but the car didn't have, I have two years left on my lease. I will most likely be custom ordering an m340 once my lease is up 😁

Mine came from off the lot because I didn't have much time left. As a result, I ended up with non staggered all season tires, my biggest regret.

Well, that was also because I didn't see the car before it arrived from out of state. There's a high chance next time I will order since I want the summer performance non run flats which seem very few dealers order for their inventory.

Neither!

I went to the dealer to do a deal on a new one...after some discussion they offered me their MDs car, five months old, 4000 on the clock, exactly the spec I wanted (I.e. Every option bar tow bar) and £20k cheaper than list (albeit I was confident of negotiating around 18% discount).

Only compromise it is black on black, not what I had in mind but I can live with it.

My last BMW was an f34 - picked that up from a main dealer at a great price with 57 miles on it.

I am not averse to ordering what I want, but if there is a cracking deal out there.....

Would you guys say you generally can find a better deal on the lot? Or are dealers willing to offer incentives if you order through them?

Most dealers will offer pretty much full incentives on orders too I've found. May depend on your region.

But where I live, people mostly buy SUV's and the M340i's haven't been selling well at all. Most dealers still have the same inventory they had last summer. This makes for even better negotiating in my opinion!

Exactly what I was thinking. Being in Minnesota, SUVs are also the preferred choice here, though the local Motorwerks dealership is a stickler when it comes to negotiating.

Out of curiosity, how long did everyone wait for their factory builds?

I ordered a m340i in the UK on the second weekend of feb and got an expected build date around the mid to end of April.

Wow. That's quite longer than I would expect. I assume 340s are taking longer than 330s?

Yeah it could be, let's hope mine gets delivered early really depending on it. Mine was a factory order. Dealerships love taking your deposit for the order and ordering the car a week later when they're less busy too I've noticed. They like securing the deal then serving other customers

I have a G30 but I ordered it. My previous one was from a lot. I way prefer ordering it.

One possible consideration for you: if, like me, you don't like the 3 series leather, the only leather alternative is special order Merino. Well worth it in my opinion but you won't find a 3 series on the lot with Merino unless it is one that someone ordered and then walked away from.

All the cars on the dealership were basic 330 and didn't appeal to me.

Definitely custom ordered my 330 xdrive with M-sport and Excellence package. Intentionally waited since 2016 until F30 ended production in 2018. Ordered everything exactly with the colour and all the options that I wanted and have not looked back.

Despite the high initial cost, I know I would regret it down the road in 2 to 3 years without the options I wanted. Therefore selecting the car off the dealership lot was not an option.

I waited for 3 years and waiting extra 2-3 months after placing my order in spring of 2019 is nothing in the grand scheme of things as I still had my existing vehicle.

Ordering is definitely worth the experience.

I got mine from the dealer inventory. I did get lucky because I got a 330i M Sport in Black Sapphire with Black 19" wheels and the shadowline grille. The car was ordered by a customer but he backed out at the last minute a week prior. I found it and swooped it up.

Ordered beginning of January, car was at the dock waiting for a boat to fill mid February. It is usually a 6 week process.

What can make your wait seem shorter or longer is the boat. If your car is one of the last cars on there is no wait. If your car is one of the first on there could be two weeks waiting for the boat to become full.

On the water about 10 days. Few days at the port. Then to the dealer.

Always worth the wait.

The boat my car was on made three port calls in Europe one in Canada before New York. Then two more ports on the east coast.

Built. Nearly impossible to find preferred configuration on the lots. Much of the inventory at the dealerships I don’t have any options or particular color combinations.
