Lightbulb G22 4 Series Model Update

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
July 2019 Update:

G22 4 Series is coming as expected in July 2020. It will mostly copy the G20 lineup, with one exception: RWD M440i seems unlikely. Don't expect manuals in the U.S.

Mild hybrid tech I mentioned first in the May update will start expanding quickly next year (G22 will have it at intro, but it'll find its way into G05, G07, probably others I simply haven't noticed).

What about the F34? There have been reports in the german press that it would get EOP'd next year due to space constraints in Dingolfing and plans to build electric drivetrains there. That doesn't sound very logical to me, but?

With the G22 m440 leaning xdrive only do you see any plans to kill the USA only m340 rwd? Obviously this piece of data would tell us the m340 xdrive is doing the lions share of the sales.... I can't imagine the biz case to sustain one platform variant for one market (albeit the largest one for this car) would be strong?

Both of these questions are hitting in my blind spot: I know how long each model _can_ exist but I can't say if that potential lifecycle is going to be shortened by external factors. For example, when BMW stopped selling F06/F12/F13 earlier than the original EOLs of those models, it was as surprising for me as for everyone else because that was driven by sales and/or Dingolfing constraints, that is the same factors that could affect F34 and M340i RWD.

In the case of F36 above I can answer with more confidence because I know there's a direct successor to the model and I know when it's planned to be introduced. There's also no plant change: the same production line building F36 today will start building G26 two years from now.

Going back to M340i RWD, there's one thing that makes me think it's here to stay: it'll be built at SLP. That plant is focused on the U.S. market so the models it builds can be unique to the U.S. without creating too much inefficiency in the rest of the system.

Also - as long as y'all keep buying it, BMW will keep building it.

No 6MT for G22 either which makes sense but xDrive only for M440i? Interesting.

6MT is truly only for M3/M4 now (I hope...)!

The M340 is only offered in xDrive variants outside of the states, so this makes sense to me. I'd say the USA M340 will go the same direction by the time the G20 LCI hits (if not before then). Remember, the M340 being offered in RWD for USA only was somewhat of a game-time decision.

It's truly a sad day if both these things are true.

Where can we expect to find manual transmission G serie cars in North America?

You won't, unless it's an M car (maybe).

Even for the G80 it's not sure so maybe the G42 and the G87.

The loss of manual transmission across the lineup is pretty disappointing... I get that people in NA don't actually buy many, but BMW has a base of customers who are enthusiasts unlike any brand.

I know the auto is faster, smoother, has more gears and for most average drivers is the better choice. But I grew up with manual BMWs, I got my license all those years ago in a manual e36 M3. I live in the EU part time and It's hard to think of myself as the minority when all I see are 3 pedal cars over here. If they make them for EU, why not let NA customers take ED of manual cars. I get not shipping 3 pedal cars to sit on lots and showrooms, but ordering and taking ED is a different story.

They don't make additional 6MT cars in the EU - it's just that BMW has 6MT as option on the lower-end cars (like 20i) that BMW NA decided not to offer. You can't get the 30i with 6MT in the EU either.

I'm not fussed about the new M440i not having a manual option as the ZF box is fantastic.
It's a shame that it will only be available in xDrive though - BMW losing a bit more of it's DNA, I'm afraid

Yep - the past F30 in 330i trim with manual, slicktop, with M-sport Package was a nice combo for a fun cheap lower maintenance daliy driver.

They don't make them for EU. The 330i and M340i aren't available with a manual transmission anywhere in the world, and there are no plans for that to change. And, since the 430i and M440i will use the same drivetrains, the same applies to those products as well.

Furthermore, switching the location of delivery does nothing to change the factors that keep vehicles produced for sale in other countries from being made available to US customers. There are a whole host of differences between a Euro-spec and US-spec vehicle, and there is a cost associated with producing a vehicle that meets regulatory requirements for a specific region of the world. So, for example, even if the 320d were available here in the US, but there was no manual transmission offered as there is in other parts of the world, it would not be possible to simply allow a US customer to take delivery of their car in Europe in order to get a manual transmission.

Finally, while you may see a lot of vehicles with manual transmissions in Europe, when it comes to brand new premium vehicles, manual transmissions are being offered in very few cases. This is not a matter of BMW cutting features, but an industrywide trend that BMW is forced to recognize and acknowledge in order to compete on costs and remain viable. In fact, in the US, BMW's main competitors, Mercedes and Audi, have eliminated the manual transmission entirely while BMW still offers them on select high performance models.

It is extremely sad to see, however there are a lot of enthusiast brands that are switching over. For example, I did some contracting work for a Subaru dealership, and to see a WRX with a CVT automatic nearly made me sick. I remember seeing a Grand Tour episode where they put a Polo GTI with a DSG vs a manual Fiesta ST and some kind of Toyota Yaris pushing 200+ HP, and the Polo, with the automatic, destroyed the other two with more weight and less power. Technology is just moving quickly. I just pray they don't start phasing the manuals out in the M Cars completely, that will be a very very sad day.

It started years ago. F10 M5 was not available with MT in the UK. No, not even an option.

Seeing as the odds of the G8X platform may not come in a manual that M4CS is becoming more and more enticing for me...

I guess I should have backed up my observation adding that while I do see mostly 3 pedal cars, very few are spec'd to the enthusiast level. Most F chassis cars here are diesel with at the very best the m sport package.

I rarely see a petrol, turbo cars here since Italy taxes based on output and CC's. An actual ///M car here is more rare than a Ferrari or Maserati.
