Help! I'm having second thoughts about the M340i I ordered

I’m 30 days away from the lease end date of my 2016 M4, and recently placed an order for an M340i.

Now I’m having remorse! I love the M4, but I need something more practical right now (ie AWD, etc...). Someone talk me off the emotional ledge!!

I’m having irrational thoughts of financing the M4, which is insane considering the true value is around 42k, and the buyout is around 57k!!

I know I know.. first world problems... I tell myself I’ll be in a better spot in 3 years to move back into an M. But it’s going to kill me seeing an M on the road while I’m rolling around in the M340

My lease ends on 4/23 on my M4 and I’m seriously considering doing the same thing. Less money for 90% of the performance (Especially in city driving). What’s your M340i spec?

Awesome!!

- Portimao blue metallic
- 19" M Double-spoke jet black wheels, style 791M with all-season run-flat tire
(19x8.0, 225/40 R19)
-Executive pkg
-Premium pkg
-Cognac Vernasca Leather
-Harmon Kardon surround sound
-Adaptive M Suspension
-Driving assistance pkg
-remote start
-power tailgate
-Ambient lighting
- Interior trim finishers Aluminium 'Mesheffect‘
Price came in around 64k, and approximately 833/month, which isn’t too far off from my M4.

Right now it’s an emotional attachment with the M4, had some fun times in that car!

I test drove a 330i just to get a feel, acceleration was pretty snappy for a 4 cyl. I’m hoping that extra 100 ponies with torque closes the gap!

I did the same thing this previous generation and immediately regretted it, as I was back in an M within 6 months. Once you own an M, you'll always be left wanting in anything less. That said, I totally get the need for more doors / practicality.

Also keep in mind that while the Ms are pretty stable during their lifecycle (i.e. not a ton of changes) the 330 /340 are like thunderdome and can be radically improved from year to year. Just something to keep in mind if that kind of stuff bothers you.

Good luck with whatever you choose!!

Have you considered the M550i?? I know it's bigger than the 3 series, but it's 4 door and AWD with a 500+ HP V8.

I had a 535, 335 and 440 in the last six years. This M550i that I just picked up a month ago is my favorite of all time. Can get a nice car for $75k.

don't buy your own lease. too much money. if you really want that same car, wait for the dealership to offer it for sale. you will save yourself money and end up with a Certified Warranty. just my two cents!

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I think the first plan is to see if I can get it as a CPO from the dealer, if that doesn't work I'll grab the M340 for a couple of years, and then try for a G80, by that time all the kinks should be worked out!

If your number one reason for owning a sporty car is for straight line speed, I bet you'd be happy with the M340i. I'm also assuming you have an automatic M4 so transmission doesn't really matter.

As far as buying the car out. You wouldn't want to buy out the lease, but you could take it to your dealer and try to work out a deal with them. You know it's not worth the residual and they know it's not worth the residual. The residual is just there so you can lease the car cheaply. The dealership can accept the lease return and then work out a deal to sell the car directly back to you for closer to the actual retail price.

LOL!! Really!?! Then I guess that settles it... M340i offer is starting to look better! Timing never works out for me!

You're correct, I have a DCT. Hate to admit it, never learned to drive a manual.. Although my wife has offered to teach me! Straight line speed is fun, but I also enjoyed the handling, car feels like it's planted during hard cornering with summer tires.... Since there are no cars available I have NO idea how the M340 handles with M adaptive, the 330i I test drove did not feel as planted as the M, which is to be expected... *fingers crossed* the M340 is a little more buttoned up!!

My plan was to get to a track someday and learn how to do slides, right now it's been relegated to empty snowy parking lots!

At this point it's between the M340i and M550i. The loaded M340 is close in price to the M550.

Can you lease the M340 for 24 months, and then grab the G80?

Just think about having an M car out of warranty, that should calm you down a lot.

M340i is looking to be pretty beastly too. I would be very happy if I were in your position being able to afford a 6 cyl car with/gas.

Also, if it helps, most people don't know the difference between a 320i and an M3.

Lol! They know something is different when they see that fat butt,
and those quad pipes farting and popping!

You’re right, I’m looking at this all wrong! It could be a lot worse!

I'm pretty sure that you already had your mind made up when you posted this on the 3 series forum instead of the M3 one 🤣

The 340 won't be an M3, but it will be a blast I'm sure. Enjoy the car!

haha just keep it in sport, im pretty sure the new ones are like the 340 + MPPSK so youll get a good noise and loads of flatulence

if you want proper gunshot, plant it in 2nd gear and let go of the accelerator abruptly high up in the rev range (not too high though). id be interested to see if this is the same in the g20
