M340i - aftermarket drop in air filter

Have always used aftermarket filters on my petrol cars - tended to be K&N although I went for BMC on my motorbike.

Thinking of getting one for the M340 but I'm aware of how the oiled ones can affect MAF etc.

Looking at a dry one from AFE instead - https://afepower.com/afe-power-31-10...y-s-air-filter

I figure that would be safer.

I realise there isn't a huge performance gain though...

Thoughts?

Cheers!

The opinion of AC Schnitzer is that intake systems on current model BMWs are already very efficient, and there is little if anything to be gained from changing them. Even on cars with a performance upgrade.

Personally I think there is little if anything to be gained from after market filters these days, and some may even be detrimental. At a slight tangent - Honda Blackbird motorbikes without fail run like a pig with a K&N installed unless backed up by a rolling road session to tune the engine to match the filter. Disturbing the air intake volume in any engine is changing a basic paramater so any change is likely to have an effect of some sort.

Aftermarket filters tend to be noisy as well - some like it...not for me!!

That's also true of the Kawasaki GPz1100, even an aftermarket exhaust upsets them, but tuning an NA engine is quite different to a turbo engine. Anything you do upstream of a turbo i.e. on the turbo inlet, makes very little difference. The turbo is pumping the air in, all it needs is an adequate volume to draw from with little restriction and BMW intakes already have that.

I agree with your thinking here. If I were to go aftermarket panel filter, this would be the choice since it's a dry filter, no oil that could potentially mess with the MAF.

The performance gains might be minimal, but perhaps there's some better gas mileage to be had, as well as better throttle response. Only one way to find out, and if you don't like it, it's pretty easy to switch back to an OEM paper filter.

Waste of time for reasons Lorcan said.

Unfortunately nothing is free in this life, whilst an aftermarket filter may flow more air, its usually to the detriment of filtration. Then its down to whether the engine can utilise the extra air etc.

is the M340i too slow?
