What's holding you over until the next M3/M4?

Update:
Funny how I started this with an S3! Forgot how long ago I started this thread and folks still keep contributing and definitely my longest standing thread ... I think my second best was my DIY brakes for the F80.

Anyway.

S3 is long gone. I added a Camaro SS 1LE to the stable for track events. The Camaro loan paperwork was messed up and they basically had to take the car back from me which let me start with a clean slate. From there I took the S3 and traded that in for a lease turn-in M6 GC Competition with alllll of the goodies ($165k MSRP, paid half that). Loved it but it got hit in a parking lot and the paint job by BMW was horrible. I should've had it fixed but was so mad at how long it took and was just happy to have the car back; I just accepted it. Got rid of that car shortly afterwards (1 track day at buttonwillow first). Next, got myself an X1 knowing it would be boring but a stepping stone to my next car(s).

Now.... I'm moving this time next year and don't know where I'll be. If I'm near a race track, I'm going to want a track-tested car I can put through a weekend every month or two and not destroy it. If I'm pretty far from a track, I'll get something less trackable but still sweet. Current thoughts:

Near track:
GMC 1500 AT4 with 6.2L as tow vehicle plus:
Camaro SS 1LE or ZL1 1LE, Cayman GTS or GT4 (new or used?), Corvette C7 grand sport or C8

Somewhat near a track (2-3 trips per year):
M5 competition, M3, 992

Nowhere near a track at all:
X5M or M5 Comp or RS7 or RSQ8 or E63S wagon

Anyway ... time will tell. I'm alll over the map but I could be living anywhere on the map next year so it's fun thinking about it but the wait is killing me!

=====
Original post:

I had a 2015 and 2016 M3 .. loved 'em but I moved on due to car-trading addictions. Went through a number of vehicles trying to find the sweet spot but kinda realized the M3 was the sweet spot. Oops. I've had the S3 a little over a year and not sure I want to keep it for the next 2 years until the lease runs out. Wife's getting a new job which will help me justify blowing a few extra bones...

So... thinking of trading out the S3 for something a little bigger and nicer than the S3. Considering an S5 Sportback, M550i or maybe an M340i to hold me over until the next M3?

Not really looking for advice for what I should personally do, but just interested in what other people are doing while we twiddle our thumbs... lol.

My 2015 M4 comes off lease June 2nd. I have a 2018 on order that will probably come in in July. I will probably extend the lease on the 2015 until the 2018 comes in and even if I don't I can drive my Porsche, my Jaguar and my Miata until the M4 comes in. I won't know if I am interested in the new model M4 (G8x) until I see and drive one.

I traded in my 2015 F80 for a 2018 Comp Pkg to bridge the gap and see if the G80 is for me (which I assume it will be)

I did pretty much the same. Ordered '18 f80 ZCP to replace '16 f80.
Just in time for g80 to be released and deals to be had.

Deals are good! Great point, maybe I can get a nice deal on one if I order before too long. Talking a few extra hundred off or several thousand from MSRP?

"You can't cross shop an M2 and M5" lol. I get that all the time for various vehicles when I say I'm interested in different sized/purposed vehicles. M2 comp seems like a nice little car but I don't think I can justify the price when there's other stuff I'd rather have at that price point (namely, M3)

I was talking about next gen M3 (g80) deals.

New model comes out in 2 years. In the first 6 months dealers probably won't budge from MSRP. At the tail end of my lease, I'm hoping to get a good deal on a g80.

Haha, reason why I still have the M3... There area also a few non-BMWs on the list, but the problem is the current car checks all the boxes so well.

The current F30 was a 2012 model year. The M4 was a 2015 model year. So if the G20 is a 2020 model year, wouldn't the M4 (G82?) be a 2023? Just going by the same logic that would mean the G82 is released in 2022.

Furthermore, I think the E90 started in 2004 and the E90 M3 started in 2007.
I thinnk we have quite some time until the M4 is released. I am not sure i will be able to keep my 435i that long before upgrading.

My 2016 340 is holding me over. 6MT, track-handling, and the MPPSK delivers a ton of fun.

That said, I'm currently out of commission as I wait for a new transmission. Lost the synchro on 3rd. This is the first Bimmer I've bought instead of leased and I'm cringing at the thought that this would have cost me $14,000 if not covered by warranty.

My 2016 M4 competition, manual. Itching for a used 911.1S though. M2 Comp also looks tempting but other than improved driver involvement I feel like it would be a notch down from the M4 Comp. 2019 is supposed to bring new gen 911 too so it may be between that and all new M3.

The G20 is MY2019, not MY2020. It launches late this year.

Seven years from the F80 debut would put the G80 at early 2021 as an MY2022. However, it is feasible that it will follow closer on the heels of the 3 Series debut this time. A release ahead of the M4 instead of along with it could happen, making sometime in 2020 a possibility.

Man, this is getting longer and longer. I've decided that I'm getting a G80 as my first M3. Euro Delivery and everything. It will be my 6th 3 Series. I just need to stretch my 2016 past warranty which is scary as I'm currently having a $14,000 transmission replaced.

Maybe I sell it in 2020 for an F80 then trade up to a G80 in 2023.

Went from an individual E90 m3 to a 17 CTSV lease that ends in 2019. Starting to think about what's next. My lease payment is under $900 with only taxes Down and there's no way to get an M5 for anywhere close to that price. Gonna be hard to step down from all the power this motor makes and the fantastic suspension but I love M cars.

That's a lot of car for $900/mo for sure! I've toyed with the idea of a CTSV but my wife is stuck on the caddy being for geriatric folks lol. Her saying "no" probably makes me want one even more!

are they even going to have euro delivery on the G80?

I probably want to try to get a m340i or something but I want to do euro delivery and am afraid the cars will be made in mexico

Okay I just added something a bit hilarious to my list of time-killers. Ford Raptor. I've always thought they were a bit ostentatious, but my wife and kids think it would be a lot of fun. I tend to agree. So now I'm cross shopping a Raptor vs 540i vs 340i which I bet I can get a good deal on with them going away soon. Anyway yeah totally not apples to apples but who cares?

How do you like your S3? They are very good cars... the chassis for its price is quite solid.
