Folks, please can anyone comment if the extra £990 for the merino leather is worth considering. New car ordered in Feb, currently waiting for confirmation of build date.

I’m in exactly the same position.

Just bought a 320d M sport having sold my RS3 saloon as I wanted something more economical for a mew longer commute.
The rock hard seat pan and ribbed leather along with the offset position is aggravating my back and leg / things muscle.
I’ve only had the car 2 weeks and I’m seriously considering getting rid.

It’s a shame really as I like the car and it’s ideal in every way apart from the seat !

Compared to the 5 series it’s like night and day for driving position comfort.

As others have said the seats do soften up after a couple of months. I also have the Merino leather. Highly recommend it as it's definitely more supple.

I got my new M340i in July and it gave be really bad leg and back pain from 15 mins after driving out of the showroom.

I considering get rid of it as it was so bad. however 3 months on and I find that having adjusted the seats I have finally found a comfortable position.

The leather does soften up and I only have the standard leather, but for me the biggest thing was to adjust the seats and then leave them for a couple of days to see if it is comfortable, dont keep adjusting it every 5 mins as I was doing.

the other thing that worked for me was I got in my wife's Audi, where the seat is very comfortable and looked at how it was set up, then set the BMW seat up the same way - ie tilt, height etc etc.

stick with it (although the seats are nowhere near as comfortable as the Audi S5 I just sold!)

When I bought my G20 the seats were hard but 6 months in they have softened nicely and I find them very comfortable now. I guess it's like buying a new pair of leather boots, at first they are uncomfortable but once the leather softens and they wear in they become more comfy over time. I also tend to clean and condition the leather seats each month and this might have attributed in softening the leather too

I must be in the minority but I find the seats very comfortable so snug with the head rest adjusted close to my head, in fact so comfy I have to take brakes to 'wake up'. I can spend hours at a time driving this car, much more comfortable than our 2018 5 series.

Just a few of notes. I have standard leather, manual seats and lumbar. I'm not sure if finding the perfect position is easier with manual control?

I think anything more than 2 hours and I regret my purchase. Hands down the most comfortable seats I ever had were in an E92 SE. They were like recliners and you could sit in them for hours and only get up to answer nature's call... because if you don't pick up the call you won't like the message it leaves on the answering machine.

I’ve made the decision to get rid.

I’m going to loose about £1500 and only had it two weeks but it’s that bad.
Can’t see me getting away with it and was planning on keeping it 5 years and doing about 25k a year in it.

I’m going to go buy a 5 series at the weekend I think

Tried all combinations of adjustments to no avail (although I agree with another poster that it would be good if the seat pan could be tilted even further than it can be currently).

So I purchased a memory foam seat cushion from my local auto parts store - problem solved for about $30 (NZ). A recent four-hour trip was completed in perfect comfort.
UPDATE : Now I've had my M340i for nearly 18 months, the seats are no longer an issue. They seem to have softened (or my derriere has adapted to them !) and I no longer need the extra cushion. Other posters' comments seem to bear out my experience : you need to give these seats time to "wear in".

When I first spec'd my previous 330i, I was worried that the Sport seats would be too firm, having suffered on and off with lower back pain over the years. But I actually found them immensely supportive: even without opting for the lumber support (which is unnecessary and can often be more uncomfortable/irritating than it is ameliorative for your back), I found I could do long drives without a niggle. The same goes now for my 340. In both cars, if I have an early start--and regardless of whether it's actually chilly or not--I tend to stick the seat heating on low for bit, sometimes for the full drive, and that helps the lower back muscles to relax and will work better than any add-on foam support. Yes, the seats in the G20s are firm, but having spent a couple of days recently in a 530e on loan from the dealer, I can't say I found it noticeably more comfortable. I guess it all depends upon what you want out of a car: the 3 is undoubtedly firm all round, from chassis to dampers to seats. But then, I suppose BM is inviting us to embrace its character as a taut, poised, performance saloon, not a wafty limo. I also think taking time to get the driving position just right really helps, even if it's a faff: typically I've found in the past that it's my fault if I end up feeling uncomfortable or strained because the seat is either too far back or reclining too much!

Awesome immediately.

Definitely a lot firmer than the F30. I feel the F30 has much more comfortable seats.

The G20 Sport Seats's bottom is too firm and uncomfortable. It lacks of padding.
Coding the car with Comfort+ and reducing the tire pressure helps a bit.

I'm still looking for a better solution than putting a cushion.

I have the M Sports seats in mine, I they are certainly more comfortable that the standard sports seats, and it's not the same leather either.

I did test drive a few 330d's and a 320d that all had the standard seats and they were too hard for me too be comfortable in after any decent length of time. 20 mins max test drives and they were already starting to feel uncomfortable.

The seats on my G21 are definitely less comfortable than those on my previous two F31s. After an hour or so I get lower back pain which can't be alleviated by changing the lumbar settings. A shame, as everything else about the car is so much better than the F3x.

That was exactly what I experienced with my first G22 that had the standard vernasca leather, bloody uncomfortable. The current car I have I specced full BMW Individual merino interior and the difference in the seating feel and quality against the vernasca is light and day.

G20 here with electric merino leather sport seats with lumbar support, they look amazing but I always get lower back pain after long drive, I am fairly young and don't have any chronic back pain issues.

I don't remember having this issue on my F30 in vernasca leather

I suspect I'm considerably older than yourself but fortunately don't suffer too much with back issues and also never had a problem with the sports seats in my previous two F32 coupes with the standard Dakota leather nor with my wife's current F22 coupe which also has Dakota leather.
I often wonder where BMW are going these days with their vehicle design?

Hey I think they are heading into the future, someone has to push forward the design and BMW are doing just that, I don't have to like some of it or agree with it....

Can't say I found the sports seats in my G21 M340i either uncomfortable or noticeably different from the sports seats in my E9x or F31 BMW's. They were trimmed in merino - whereas the previous generations had the standard leather - but to be honest I always thought that made more of a difference to appearance and feel rather than comfort!

Don't get me wrong I wasn't criticising BMW merely making a personal observation!

BMW have always promoted themselves as the frontrunners for pioneering new design directions and have always been ones to 'push the envelope' at times with mixed reaction from the buying public.
Like you I don't have to like some of it or agree with it either, it ultimately boils down to personal preference.
