Came across this ratty 2002 whilst out and about on a Sunday drive in central PA. I wonder how many of these are left in the US?

Not many i can imagine - i don't think many are left anywhere!

Did it look like it was in use?

More than you’d think. Just do a Google search and you’ll find many for sale in the states.
Very few original examples but many in various states of restored. Still wish I kept my 1974 2002.
Best, and most fun car I’ve ever owned.
