Speedometer off by ~3mph

I'm about 3 weeks in on my purchase of a M340i and I've noticed that my Speed-o is always off on Waze. I tested with a few different tools including a dragy and it does appear to be off by 3mph. Always reads faster on the car, than on Waze or dragy.

Anyone else notice this? May want to check as it'll greatly decrease your lease use over 32k

Not unexpected. European legislation dictates speedos must not under-read by any margin at all (-0/+x%). Tolerances mean there is always a positive over-reading.

All 5 BMWs I've had have read ~3 MPH higher than actual speed when checked against GPS.

I've also heard that this is by design. And that non-US spec cars can be coded to make the speedo accurate, but US cars cannot.

Quite possibly one of the top ten discussion topics on BMW car forums, and other cars as well. Completely normal.

The speedo display is high, but the odometer is accurate. You car actually does record the accurate speed and distance traveled.

That’s a common thing here in Europe. 125 km/h on the speedometer where 120 km/h is perfectly fine

If it bothers you, you can get it coded to the correct read. I like the safety net it gives me from speeding tickets. I usually set my ACC for 11 miles over the speed limit knowing that it will keep me under ten miles over which is what photo radar uses before it snaps a photo.

Good play.

In LA, it is basically irrelevant, we are either in mind numbing traffic, or everyone is speeding at 15mph over the limit without regard.

Just yesterday I noticed the same thing. 2mph off at low speeds (30mph shown on the speedometer when driving 28) and 3 mph off at higher speeds (70mph shown when driving 67).

Depending on the speed you use to measure the inaccuracy, you could easily be 5% off. That equates to me losing 2500 miles of the 50,000 factory warranty. Will BMW extend the warranty for this?

No no no, the odometer works with real km to prevent this kind of discussions. The speedometer is biased to make sure you don't go over the speed limit

As others have said this is common, but which wheel/tire package do you have? According to my GPS radar detector my M340i with staggered 19" PS4S is exactly on the mark. 75 mph = 75 mph.

More or less all cars in europe have that.

You really would not be happy to get caught by an automatic speed camera speeding 2 mph above the limit while "my speedometer showed correctly'. You'd still be fined.

More over, speedometer are not meteorologicaly tested anyway

We mustn't forget that even if a speedo is accurate, it will still deviate with changing tire tread depth. Changes to tire pressures also influence the reading accuracy.

We have statutory regulation (as has already been stated) and must include tire manufacturing tolerances and wear allowance in any initial calibration, can easily exceed a 3% variation.

Old news for bmw.

You can code it out.

I turned it off and upped my wheels +1. My speedo mostly matches waze. Might be 1mph higher at times.

So the odometer and speedometer are not synchronized? That's interesting.

20" staggered M-Performance wheels. But as you know, the car is programmed with that info in the iDrive settings so it shouldn't be an issue.

A new twist on this topic

After reading the multiple threads on this topic, I downloaded a speedometer app for my phone called GPS Speed. On a long trip about a week ago I used this app and saw that at speeds above 80 kmph, the car speedo was showing 3 - 4 kmph more than the real speed. So same experience as others have had.

The odd thing is, on the return journey which I did yesterday, I checked again. This time the car speedo showed 1 kmph above the real speed shown by the app. Can it be that the car speedo has become more accurate in the space of a week? There was no update that I am aware of.

This is in a 2021 G22 430i.

Uh oh.....I better be careful, I've always relied on speedo being 3 mph high for the last 40 years worth of BMWs.....

If you use BimmerCode and open up instrument panel, you can change:

BC_V_KORREKTUR

To ohne korrektur.

All fixed, your Speedo now shows the correct speed
