Michelin pilot sport 4S

I'm about to change my original front tyres .
I just realised the rears 255x35x19 are PS 4s BMW specific but the fronts 225x40x19 are not BMW specific .
I wonder what other cars came with .
I have about 23 k k's but the front passengers side has developed a small bubble, the fronts still have plenty left but I don't want to change one tyre.

What do you mean by “BMW Specific”? What should I look for?
I think all my PS4s are standard Michelin.

BMW-specific tyres have a star symbol on the sidewall. See:

https://www.bmw.com/en-au/offers-and...els-tyres.html

But you don't have to buy through BMW. Tyresales, Bob Janes etc. can all source the tyres. Mercedes use MO, Jaguar J, Audi AO etc. It means the tyres are optimised in development with a specific vehicle manufacturer. They are still Michelin PS4S, but will have subtle variations from the manufacturer which have been 'tweaked' in the development stage.

Many thanks for the explanation. I had no idea tyres were marked like this.
I’ll check mine out next time I get in the car.

Sorry Steve I should have explained it before.
As per above they have a star after the *pilot sport 4s* on the side walls . That means they are BMW specific tyres.
I was surprised to note that only the rears are BMW specific, not the fronts. I'm wondering if other M340 cars are the same.
I owned the car for well over two years and never noticed it before.

I don't intend to buy tyres from BMW, they are very expensive .
I can get PS 4s BMW specific for $420, I don't know what BMW sell them for but my guess is a lot more ..

Gents,

Have a look at this video, which I remembered having seen - I didn't have time earlier to search for it. It's exactly on point to the PS4S OEM vs non-OEM discussion, on a BMW M3:

I don't disagree. But it's better info, better explained than I've found anywhere else. And its notoriously difficult to get objective information about tyres. A tyre which works well for one individual on one model might be totally unsuited for someone else's driving needs on a different car. At least you can analyse what he's saying, add it to info from other sources and use it to help inform your own decision. The big issue with tyres is that they can be a mistake that is very expensive to remedy - as I've found out to my considerable cost in the past.

Took me while to remember to check the tyres, but all my PS4S tyres have a star on them. I don’t understand why your fronts would be non-BMW specific. It doesn’t make sense to me, now that I understand why tyres are specific to certain manufacturers and certain models.

Is it possible to go back to your dealer and ask the dealer to replace your fronts with the correct tyres that should have come with the car in the first place? You could argue that, in effect, the dealer has sold you a car that was not fully equipped as it should have been.
Also, you have paid for a certain quality of tyre with this particular model, and have received an inferior product that does not meet the specifications in the contract that you signed.

I'd checked mine (which are the original tyres from new) after getting on this thread and they're all correct, star-marked PZeros. Based on prior experience I'll switch to Michelin PS4S when I replace my tyres on this car. I have them on my Jaguar XF and I think they have better traction than the PZ4. They're also quieter on coarse chip blacktop (although that could be the car, or that they're not RFTs on the Jag - impossible to know) and they improved the steering feel on the Jag which would be a real win on the BMW. I'd like to hear pros and cons from anyone who has experienced both on a G20.

Thanks for the input Steve.
I already replaced them as I didn't want to drive on a tyre with a bubble .
It will be very hard to argue that case and not worth the effort.
In any case the difference in price is $20 per tyre , that's $20 extra for the star tyres .

Fully understand.
Out interest, how much were the tyres and where did you get them from?
I assume you bought the “star” tyres.
