But can you PROVE that?

No one has yet to instrument prove this.

When they do, I'll be impressed. Until then, it's opinion and speculation.

I believe this is an enthusiast forum not a court, that's why he's posting here sharing his opinion and experience to confirm with others, while others maybe like me reading what others are experiencing to see if I should try to avoid update to my car?

Could it be as simple as bmw using software from their newest models to implement OTA updates on their older ones?

How?
Pops: Put it in sport+, floor it, and let off the gas. The RPM's hang and you get a series of loud pops and bangs. The same thing happens when the car downshifts if you decelerate quickly.

Burbles: Under hard acceleration in sport+ the upshifts cause the burble.

I think he/she might have been asking how are you still getting the loud pops and bangs after the OTA update.

I am getting them because there were no changes made to that aspect of the car

I concur. No changes whatsoever to the tuning of my car after software updates.

I just had a 2020 loaner while my car was in for the hk amp replacement. The sport+ felt exactly the same and the loaner was on 03/20. My 21 is on 11/20. Only noticeable difference is the crackles are gone in my 21, the pops are very very limited and random, and the burbles are there but slightly quieter. Neither have the MPE.

The new update for some reason isn't affecting all the models when it comes to the pops and burbles, but it is meant to stop the pops. My car is tuned by Mission Performance(hired by Toyota to tune the heritage edition supra 2 years in a row) and when it updated to the new DME my burbles and pops were noticeably different, Alex is going to turn the aggression of the burbles/pops up to be like what it was when I was stock). But it took a lot convincing to make him do it because he agrees with BMW that these burbles and pops are not good for the engine.

I just don't get why BMW just decided to do this with the g20 when they offered the MPPSK for F30 and burbled/popped like crazy and now after 5 years they decide to do change that.

Anywho, go on BimmerCode -> HU_MGU-> expert mode -> search "sound" -> turn on both configuration and menu -> go to general settings -> engine sound-> sporty. You'd have to do this everytime though, for some reason keeps going back to "depending on driving mode"

This only modifies the exhaust flap and ASD. Does not modify the DME to bring back the original sound.

I couldn't tell, but other members were saying it was making a difference for them. I have the same amount of burbles, but no pops, since I'm tuned.

Do you know what "m-sound" does? Pops up on the menu under the menu and configuration for BimmerCode

If I had to pin a number to it, I would say it's 1/3rd as loud as it used to be.

The car's performance doesn't appear to be neutered though. However I have found myself recently needing to use the paddle shifter for better 1st to 2nd gear shifts to prevent revhang with dynamic traction enabled (PS4S tires)... which I had never needed to do before. I suppose the weather is too cold and cold tire/road traction limitations sort of stop me from doing an apples to apples comparison in that regard.

Conspiracy theory: Maybe that's the reason why BMW waited for the winter to release their software in North America. They figured people are babying their cars for the winter and won't notice a change in exhaust and performance. By the time spring/summer arrive with optimal driving conditions, people will have adapted without realizing the car's dynamics are reduced.
Conspiracy Theory #2: Is this how the BMW does it?
If the Hybrid system replaces the need for this, then perhaps that is what has occurred. Also, Germany has gotten awful regulatory in the past 2 years in regards to noise, and many other automotive things. Maybe that is why. Why would they just do it to EU cars? I Am not sure. Maybe the same reason American cars have the side marker parking lamps. Cost.

Conspiracy theory 3#: This is my FAVORITE. Winter gas. Winter Gas changes the properties of the fuel and how the fake pops occur. In Summer, your car is louder.

Thinking about getting exhaust, seems worth it from what I have read and heard here. Mod'd I meant like software or programming

I have read speculation that cars produced sometime in July 2019 and earlier won't get any sound dynamics changed with updates, while newer ones will. This is also supposedly the cutoff for locking DME IIRC. Sounds like BMW only wants to maintain 2 firmware for before/after this switchover if that is true.
