Road Rash w/ Ceramic Coating

I have 8.5/9.5" summer wheels and noticed on my last two BMW's which have been ceramic coated that road rash seems to show up quicker. I have PS4 tires and my road in my neighborhood has been getting repaved recently so there's some loose gravel etc sticking to my tires and getting kicked up.

I'm sure this can be paint corrected, but between this and the dirty highways this year (not sure if this is due to lack of cleaning as a result of Covid?), I'm going to either find a way to live with it or take it back to get PPF on top of my ceramic. The highways out here have been super dirty and it's driving my OCD nuts since this car was ceramic coated with only a few hundred miles on the clock.

Anyone else have this issue, especially with those who have more aggressive offsets? What did you do to fix it/keep it from happening?

Hmmm...what's your wheel offset or are you running spacers? Can't think of any other options besides PPF or splash guards.

I would get your side skirts wrapped in PPF, and maybe a 2-3" piece that cuts off at the body line. Should look seamless. You could even ceramic coat over the PPF if you want to keep the entire car coated.

ET 26/37. Very close to 795M dimensions but slightly more concave and .5" wider front and 1" wider rear. I don't have spacers either.

I'm pretty sure it could easily be paint corrected but I should have done PPF and ceramic. I almost feel that the ceramic shows more road rash when it's exposed to the elements.

Front of my car is also showing some minor imperfections and for being 6 months old it bothers me. Going to get PPF on front of car but thinking I'm going to do side skirts too.

Anyone have experience buffing out these imperfections w a ceramic coating? I'm guessing it's more involved. Most people wouldn't care but then again I'm not most people

Seems like there's plenty running a more aggressive set up and haven't seen anyone have to install mudflaps. Maybe they can chime in too?

Gdiddy23 ,

Had my car ceramic coated as well and I have splash guards on all four wheels (found a eVay seller that provided a front and rear sets that perfectly.

Having done all that, however, I still had some road rash on the front of my M340. I used Dr Color Chip kit and it worked like a champ to get rid of the little dings. BTW, I used Dr Color Chip on my previous car and in both cases, the color matched great!

Hope that helps!

Not to hijack but can post or PM a pic of your car with the splash guards? Maybe a link or eBay seller name too. Thanks.

I see Tommy L Garage has them but they're expensive and not sure I love the look. Would prefer to not have to buy these but I suppose it's not the end of the world.

I'm just surprised more aren't having these kind of issues? I mean my fronts are only .5" wider and tires are 235 sizes so not a drastic difference

Gdiddy23 , & M340_pilot ,

First off, sorry I can't give you link or picture as I'm on my phone & doing either is above my skill level. There is a full thread on this sub-forum on splash guards/mud flaps.

Having said that, however, I can tell you I got them from eBay seller, lamautostore for $49.99. They fit terrific & not only look good, but cut down on junk coming up onto car. If you search for splash Guards on eBay, you'll find them. The listing with blue car fit my M340 (and I think M330 sport), while one with white car is for M330

UPDATE: Attached are pics of front & rear wheels

Hope that helps!

Yeah I read through that one!

My question is also towards the ceramic coating. I feel that the ceramic shows the imperfections more than if it weren't coated. You can see these white specs from where debris hit the clear coat. I noticed the same on my last bmw which was black

This may not be your case but I use Turtle Wax bug and tar remover, the foaming kind and get rid of most of it and wax it. It seems in my case, most of it is debris mixed in tar and looks like it etched paint. Take a closer look and clean cautiously.

Will try this and let you know!

The ceramic coating is great for washing etc but wish I went with PPF and ceramic.

Can ceramic coating be easily buffed or does that take more preparation?

I'm not experienced with ceramic coatings. I'm somewhat anal and clean my cars every weekend until lately with my back acting up. I have three black BMW'S and one Graphite. I typically keep my cars paint maintained and saw no need for ceramic.
I still believe a little bug and tar remover and some wax will do it. I won't advise you, but WD-40 and wax have been a go to for me and never had a issue.

OT but TB2 (the color is TB, isn't it?) looks stunning! Do you also have pinstripes on your car? Or is that a shadow?

VipinLJ ,

Thank you very much; it is indeed, TB2. I did add Pinstriping-- nice kit & great video instructions & owner is very helpful. Here's the site:
