330e vs 330i parts comparison
I just did a parts comparison on RealOEM between g20 330e, 330i. There has been some discussion on the derating of the 330e ICE compared to the 330i and I was interested to see if BMW derated the physical parts.
On non-engine parts I also included the 340i just to get a sense of how much extra capacity is available for tuning. For each I used the euro model and manuf date 12/19. Basic conclusion is that the 330i and 330e are more similar than I expected, particularly the engine parts. It does seem as if the derating is software and that the physical parts are there to cope with a tune. For the cooling and brakes the 330i and 330e have similar systems as their big brother the 340, so plenty of capacity there. I would want to better understand the 330e's transmission's capacity before going for one of those crazy tunes. The 330i is similar to the 340i but the 330e is quite a complex arrangement as it has the built in electrical motor but does not increase its physical size. I imagine it would be v. costly to replace if you had to... Some weird differences: The 330e has a higher powered fan than both the 330i or the 340i but a different water pump. I wonder if the engineers are taking advantage of all the extra electrical juice to increase the air cooling and decrease the water cooling? Also the 340i and 330i both have a 2.81 gear ratio on the rear differential but the 330e has a 3.23 gear ration. This should let the 330e accelerate marginally faster with the same power but have a lower top speed. Not sure why they did that? Engine: Short engine: 330i and 330e both listed as B48B20B but part numbers are different Cylinder Head:330i and 330e both same Crankshaft: 330i and 330e both same Piston: 330i and 330e both same Connecting rod: 330i and 330e both same Oil pump and drive: 330i and 330e both same Turbo charger coolant lines: 330i and 330e both same Heat Management modules: 330i and 330e both same Intake manifold: 330i and 330e both same Turbo charger and exhaust manifold: 330i and 330e both same Coolant Pump: 330i and 330e are different but use same water pump. 330e seems designed to incorporate an energy recovery system Cooling system: Engine cooling radiator 330i, 330e and 340i all same Transmission cooling radiator 330i, 330e and 340i all same Expansion tank 330i, 330e and 340i all same Electric water pump 330i and 340i same 330e different Aux water pump 330i and 340i same 330e different Main cooling fan: 330i is 400w, 340i is 500w and 330e is 1000w Brakes Front disks and calipers: 330i, 330e and 340i all same Rear disks and calipers: 330i, 330e and 340i all same Transmission Automatic Transmission: 330i and 340i both GA8HP51Z but have different part numbers 330e is GA8P75HZ that incorporates the electric motor Rear Differential: 330i and 330e are both 190AL but 330e has a 3.23 gear ratio and 330i has a 2.81 gear ratio Main Drive shaft 330i, 330e and 340i all different Fuel and Air Intake Throttle: 330i, 330e both same High pressure fuel rail and injectors: 330i, 330e both same High pressure fuel pump: 330i, 330e both same Air duct: 330i, 330e both same Air intake: 330i, 330e both same Exhaust systems 330i, 330e are different |

Awesome research, thanks for sharing this info! I hope some of the folks with mechanical knowledge in this forum chime in and share their thoughts about the differences.

having the e-motor instead of the torque converter is that good or bad if HP/NM is increased?

I know this is a post from last year but I've only just got myself a 330e and was also wondering what made the ICE in the 330i 258HP and the ICE in the 330e 184HP when they are both the same engine so its really interesting to see that the hardware is more or less the same in both.
So it is software not hardware that changes the power output in the 330e. Would it be safe to tune the ICE in the 330e to at least match the power output of the 330i without the risk of breaking anything?

BMW engineers have repeatedly stated that it is a mistake to say this.
In fact, in order to avoid overproduction and storage of spare parts, only the most resistant parts are manufactured, and therefore the most expensive. Clearly a piston or a connecting rod in spare parts is not the same quality as when it leaves the factory, this avoids having to manufacture and store several different pistons, since the parts can be sold at any price, but must be of higher quality to be able to go on a 340 for example. |

DavG31 thanks for that additional info.
so your info suggests that even though the ICE has the identical part numbers for most of the components they are not actually the same and the ICE in the 330e maybe weaker than the ICE in the 330i and the 330e would therefore not even be safe to tune to the same power output as the stock 330i?

Ich have found a used OEM Gearbox from an X5 45e with the same number like in 330e (GA8P75HZ). Is this the answer to the tuning skepticism? If the gearbox/Elektromotor of an X5 45e can handle 394 PS und 600Nm torque, why should be a problem by 330e?
Could somebody compare the part numbers of the ZF gearbox in 330e and X5 45e? |
