I presume it's the 'size of scale' that matters most. A bigger, heavier and faster car makes sense when distances and speed build progressively. When I drove the M5 for a day, the Baverian German high roads felt too small for this car. And to be honest, the M5 is not the most perfect track tool either since it's too heavy (but I admit, it's incredible how it can pretend to be light). So the biggest issue with a supercar like this is... there are no roads global wide to exploit it!

So when we drive real roads, with real scale, an M340i is already an extreme monster. Also, since it weights less and is a bit more nimble and agile, it's a super fine alternative for daily pleasure! It provides all the smiles, and presumably more than the M550i.

540i and M340i are only 100 pounds from each other in terms of curb weight:

540i is 3,942
M340i is 3849

My 530i tips the scales at 3,713 making it 136 pounds lighter than the M340i but 124 pounds heavier than the G20 330i.

So yes, we all drive boats. It so happens that yours is a slightly smaller kind of boat.

Only BMW series 2 owners can claim to drive the lightest BMW cars in production today, tipping the scales at 3,300 pounds for the RWD 230i. Again, who is driving boats?
you can't compare the weight of a 4cylinder 530i to an inline 6 340i. just weight alone doesn't make it feel like a boat. the lack of torque and hp in the 530i compared to the 340i will also make the 530i feel like a boat. heck the 5 series even with the inline 6 feels like a boat. the 3 series with the inline 6 does not feel like a boat unless you are tracking it.

Well, you really shouldn't just look at hp. It is more of hp per ton.

Exactly. I've heard people say that they prefer the 328, 430, or whatever 4 cylinder model to it's I6 counterpart because it's lighter overall, and has less weight in the front. In my experience the 4 cylinder models actually give the impression of being bigger and heavier due to the engine moving the car with less urgency.

The more powerful engines make these cars feel relatively light and nimble due to the relative ease with which the engine moves them.
