I noticed a subtle change with the recent software update on our 2023.

First, some backstory: I test drove a brand new fully loaded M340i a year and a half ago, I'm pretty sure it was also a 2021 but could have been a 2022. That car had an amazing exhaust, the cold start sounded fantastic and I was instantly hooked. I only past on it because the dealership wanted $5k over MSRP and I figured I could get CPO later.

Flash forward to a few weeks ago, I found this CPO M340i in Portimau blue with all the right options at a great price and jumped on it... I noticed right away during the test drive that it was quieter than I remembered but I bought it anyways.

I should have done some research before buying it as I didn't realize the 2021 is a mild hybrid and the exhaust has been neutered. Even in Sport+ I don't get any burbles or pops... just pumped in engine noise.

How do other people with 2021+ models feel about the exhaust sound? I'm probably going to get the MPE or Dinan catback, but I'm pretty bummed I have to spend another $2500. If the stock exhaust was better I wouldn't bother upgrading.
I have a '21 and had an MPE installed at 7500 miles and it made a big difference in the exhaust note. It does pop/burble good in adaptive and sport/sport plus, but not in comfort or eco. You can also mod the flap open to get more sound out of it. I'm not sure about Dinan or AWE, but be prepared for a loud cold start with an MPE.

Yes MPE brings in pops/burbles - subtle but noticable. Classy. Cold start is indeed loud: no way around it!

You can keep the flap open by coding Engine Sound and then set it to Sporty in the menu. That'll get you the exhaust notes in Comfort and Eco as well.

Tested drove a 2020 and 2021. The difference is huge. Unfortunately there weren’t much 2020 with options topped up so I picked a 21. I also coded off the active sound design and it sounds great without that artificial drone. I recommend you guys try out coding off the ASD and see if you like it

I have the LCI car it has the mppsk option which includes an exhaust. By far the best B58 exhaust compared to the G20 with or without mild hybrid though without mild hybrid sounds better than with mild hybrid which I believe is after 2020.

2021 M340i Touring. Brilliant car but just a dead log, absolutely no soul. Terrible ASD**, quiet exhaust, quiet car, just does everything properly. so yeah, not sure what to do, I don't drive the car anymore lol.

** (actually i coded it off and then was unable to bring it back so now completely no ASD - but i don't think i would have enjoyed the stupid drone - the LCI ASD is amazing though but not the pre LCI that's just an annoying drone that sounds nothing like a car more like a lawnmower)

Installed MPE on my '24 M340i new daily yesterday. The regular stock exhaust made the car sound like I was driving a Camry.

The MPE doesn't quite sound like all the videos I saw online. It's cold start is pretty darn loud and it's pretty loud in general, compared to the stock exhaust.

It's tone/pitch inside the car sounds a little "farty" to me at certain RPM ranges and during it's fairly slow transmission gear changes in automatic modes. At WOT, it sounds really good. Manual shifting it sounds better as well. Holding it at just the right RPM range when cruising, it has a very nice sports car pitch.

I'm coming from PDK transmission Porsche's, so I'm getting used to the BMW turbo 6 sound and the slower gear changes. The good part is there is no drone at all.

I wanted to do a catted downpipe but I fear how loud and droney the car will get...hopefully I can hear/ride in someone else's car that has done it first.

Overall, I like the exhaust and it's certainly an improvement in the experience over the stock exhaust. Pictures of the car for effect I'm liking it, thus far!

Downpipe with piggyback tune would add some power and sound. Add an intake to hear the turbo.

Thanks.

I have MPE with JB4 stage 1 piggyback at the moment. The only CARB approved tuner for CA, so no brainer.

I need to look into catted downpipes that will get by CA smog...and if there are any, if they won't sound too obnoxious with MPE, or introduce drone.

I have a CAI already.

I agree, in my '22 the stock exhaust was not the greatest. But I'm quite pleased with my MPE, in fact I'd go so far as to say it's the most perfect exhaust I've ever owned.
In sport plus the MPE has a sexy growl and sounds like I'm making popcorn when the revs drop. It's loud enough to hear and enjoy without sounding like an asshat ricer.
In comfort and eco the burbles stop and it's much more civilized with no highway drone.
I've owned a lot of exhausts in my life and hats off to BMW with this MPE because they nailed it.

Can you do an intake resonator delete to hear the turbo spool better?
