Oil consumption normal?
Just purchased a 2020 M340i with 36k miles on it. Ive had it just around a month and a half to 2 months now, and put about 1500 miles on it. Today the car said low oil and asked me to add 2 quarts. I had checked the oil when i got the car and it was right below the max level. Is this level of oil consumption normal? This is my first bmw, not 100% sure what to expect tbh.

Driving the car hard will cause consumption in some B58’s Do an oil change and make sure they put the correct amount in. Oil consumption for high performance engines happens when tolerance loosen with engine age. You could switch to a high viscosity oil like 5w-30 if you are in warmer climates which has been a proven practice for some. Some 2020s have seen this issue and if its under warranty take it in but don’t hold your breath on them fixing anything. Driving the car hard will cause consumption in some B58’s. just keep an eye on it. 😊

Did you confirm oil level after purchase? When was the oil last changed — or did you change oil after purchase? Low oil after just 1500 miles doesn’t sound normal depending on how you’re driving your car. I drive spiritedly quite frequently but I haven’t had any instance of low oil warning but then again my car has just 12K miles on ODO. Not like yours is a high mileage car either.

I have a 2020. 35k miles. I change my oil every 5-6k miles. About half way through I have to add two quarts. Lots of people are experiencing the same. I have a heavy foot. If you have to add more than two quarts between oil changes then maybe have someone look at it.

Car was certified pre owned so i assume the oil was changed probably right before i picked it up from the dealer. Gonna reach out to the dealer tomorrow and see what they say, oil was topped off this morning and i drove the car all afternoon today with no issues, still holding oil. So I dont imagine its super urgent. Will def keep an eye on it though.

21' here. Followed break-in properly, did an oil-change out of pocket right after break-in as per M service schedule (even though not suggested/needed for 340s/B58s).
Drive hard and Factory average is around 22MPG. Have absolutely never ever had to add a single drop of oil, ever (Currently @25k miles). Burning that much oil isn't normal. Last edited by BayM340; 08-27-2023 at 10:13 PM.. Reason: Miles |

so i went to the dealer today, turns out i did some math wrong and it was closer to 2800-3000 miles rather than 1500, and checked for leaks of any kind and found none. So the 2 quarts for 3000 miles isnt terrible, dealership wasnt too worried, says its totally normal. Ill still keep an eye on it and probably get a catchcan to see if thats where its going. Thanks all to those who responded with feedback on this.

I wouldn’t say it’s normal. However, certain B58 motors are prone to use more oil than most do. If the Condition Based Service system was not calling for an oil change it’s fairly unlikely the dealer did one even on a CPO car. You might want to ask for a copy of the four page CPO Inspection the dealer is required to complete before the car is approved to be enrolled in the CPO program. They should have provided you with a copy as part of the purchase process, but few dealers do if you don’t specifically ask for it. You might also want to ask for a copy of the work order showing the work they did to bring the car up to the CPO standards.
