Resale value with flash tune?

Like many, I ponder tuning my g20. But since many of us will look to sell a car after a few years (3-7?) I’m curious to get some datapoints on the impact on the resale value of a car being tuned Vs not.

Thinking from buyer’s perspective I would not want to buy a tuned car….would you?

I would never buy a tuned car, especially one that had any warranty left. I think most people are the same, so yes it would impact resale value. Although if you are just trading in the car to a dealership, there's a high chance they would never know.

Better to just remove the tune before you are going to sell.

I'd never buy a tuned car. Even at discount.

Never. Why was the car tuned? So it could be driven like it was stolen :-) So no thank you. I keep my 2024 M440i GC X-Drive stock.

I added nice M Performance floor mats, BMW Cargo liner, M Performance license plate frame and BMW tire valve stem caps...done.

BTW...I could not believe how cheap the tire valve stem caps were on a $70,000 plus vehicle.

I would not buy a tuned car for a daily driver. Possibly as a toy car depending on what I was looking for.

As others have said, tuning decreases resale quite a bit but there's nothing stopping you removing the tune and not mentioning it come sale time.

That is not a very righteous thing to do. Would you want that to happen to you?

Correctly me if I am wrong, even if you remove the tune the dealer can tell it was tuned. Or is that only on recent cars?

If it correct, I would hope the dealer would make that a standard check they perform.

No I wouldn't but I also wouldn't want to buy a car that has been driven hard by the previous owner and nobody owns up to that either.

It's just one of the risks of buying a used car. Realisticly people don't tell you things that they don't have to that would devalue the vehicle.

Depends on the vehicle and the type of tune, but for this particular chassis G20, I wouldn’t want to buy a used vehicle that was tuned.

I would buy a car that was tuned especially if under factory warranty. It is not worth the risk.

This is true some of the time. I have never had a problem selling mine with a tune installed. But mine are all low miles cars that never see even a drop of rain. All of my BMW’s have been tuned since my 07 335. Not everyone trashes a car because its tuned. There are more trashed cars that aren’t tuned. I usually sell my car with mods and people wait for mine. Some people want it tuned and I only had one person that wanted it removed. I don’t go overboard with my stuff but if you find one that is tuned to maxed out and running e85 in cold weather and catless that is another ball game. And now with the way BMW flags tuned cars that would be a big hit on value but you need to do a vin check for that since the seller may or may not know.

Depends on if they need to hook up to the car. If they don’t scope it no issue. But they will hook up for the maintenance when you are there and the flagging happens automatically once the cars information is downloaded. But, again it depends on what you have done and if you have any hidden tuning codes set.

Most if not all the people who can afford the car right now wouldn't buy it tuned. If you plan on keeping it for the next 7-10 years then the resale value would be minorly impacted IMO. But if you sell it in 3 years you would take a pretty decent hit in the resale value.

I had Bootmode stage 1 tune and aftermarket charge pipe on my 335 when I traded it at bmw dealership. They sold the car as stock the very same day.
