What, if anything, does the weight of the new Porsche 911 mean for the next M3/4?
The new 911 (992) has debuted and is looking radically different (just kidding). It is quite a bit heavier than the outgoing 991, by 55kg (~120 lbs.). Porsche blames bigger wheels, 20” and 21”, extra length and width, different filters, etc. Wondering if the new M3/4 are going to inevitably go down the same road?

Every new M3 has grown in size and weight so I don’t see why this new one wouldn’t. The G20 330i is heavier than F30 330i.

I certainly would not expect it to weigh less than F80. If AWD is indeed an option then that version is probably looking towards 3800 lbs. Although, current RS5 is down to 3650 so some real weight competition there.

FYI, The F80 weighs less than the previous E90 M3 it replaced. Also, the G80 is supposed to follow that by weighing less than the outgoing F80.

Why would you be looking at the Porsche 911 for clues on the size/weight of the G80? Shouldn't you be looking at the G20?

Its gonna weigh less in RWD trim, but not sure about AWD version. If you want the lightest, wait until closer to end of run to get the CSL version.

Weight takes me farther away from where I'd like to go. BTW, it does not follow that, because the g20 is heavier than the previous incarnation, the M car will follow the same pattern. So no, I don't think looking at the g20 gives me any clues. Of course the xDrive M4 may weigh more. But look at the new M5 which is lighter than the last incarnation. |

Another big contributor was composite materials - like the carbon fiber drive shaft that was discontinued due to cost and structural integrity. Always room for weight saving there but seems like the trend is more cosmetic - what would happen to m performance parts and special edition models (comp package, GTS, CSL, etc) if the car came standard with a ton of light material? |

Sure... but if you want automagical bells and whistles, arse fans, stuff to help you not concentrate on the highway, and better crash protection immediately thereafter, you gotta pay for it in dead weight

didn't porsche make all the 911s wide body ? I'd guess a lot of the weight is that on the models that didn't use to get wide body (the non 911 s and 911 )

According to audiusa.com technical specs for 2019 RS5, the Curb Weight is 3,968 lbs, 444hp, 443 ft-lb torque. Not sure why the 2019 version lost 6 hp and gained 320 lbs? |

Totally agree, but the thread was more about weight increases in the Porsche and the implied consequences that might have for the M3/4..
