Run flats or nah

Currently have a 2020 330i Msport. Rear tires need replacing , since they are a different size than the fronts I can't rotate. Thoughts on not replacing them with Run Flats, that are currently on there now?

mreef ,

My '20 M340 came with run flats in a non-square set up. Had one of them get a gouge in sidewall so I replaced the two tires on that axle with Michelin A/S 3+ tires. WHAT A DIFFERENCE-- even on just one axle. Car handles MUCH BETTER & handles bumps better.

On my last car, a '14 328, I replaced the OEM run flats with Michelins and there was a very noticeable positive difference

Hope that helps!

I swapped all my RFTs with Michelin PS A/S 3+s. Same size as OEM (225/45ZR18). The grip and handling is amazing compared to the Pirelli P7s. Haven't noticed an improvement in comfort. But the improvement in grip alone was worth the upgrade(?)!!!

I was wondering because I'm picking up a lease of someone and the rear tires need to be replaced . They have the Bridgestone Run flats 255/35/19 . Wasn't sure if it worth replacing those two with runflats and spend the extra money, or just get 2 regular and keep the front run flats. Not sure if that will mess with any handling

I have the Pirelli run flats and I’m not a fan. They make the car ride like an SUV. Also if you do any spirited driving the grip is not ideal. I’d say go Michelin PS

Mrreef ,

I know that keeping run flats only on one axle goes against the old adage of using same tires on all wheels. The car handles fine -- have even run it on the track with that set up, though am looking forward to getting Michelins all around

After only 250 miles I replaced the staggered P7 runflat summer tires on my new M440i with Continental Extreme Contact DW06 non-runflat all season tires. So much better ride, and... they have good performance grip (certainly not track worthy), have amazing traction in the rain, and stop on a dime. Hoping to not really test them in light snow but I know I will soon enough.

I was told my 320d MS had run flats, turns out they don’t which is excellent so I can choose what tyres I want when I come to replace.

I have changed out runflats for non runflats on my last two BMWs. 330i and M340. This M340 already had non runflats.
Regards,

You could chose to replace them with non run flats had it came with run flats regardless.

Another vote for non-RFTs.

I had seen people whine about how horrible RFTs were, but always thought to myself "psssht, first-world problems, these are just fine."...until I upgraded to Michelin PS4s tires on my M340i, and was blown away by the very noticeable, real-world difference in ride comfort and grip. You really have to experience the difference to understand what the fuss is about. Even with just the rears changed out as RSnic mentioned, I'm confident you'll notice a positive change and it'll be worth it.

Thanks man, since it rains a lot here in south Florida it might be a good option .

Thoughts on Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 vs Continental Extreme contact dws06 vs Michelin PS A/s +3 . Best for price and everyday highway driving in south Florida . Not going to use on a track .

I have a few friends who have the indy 500 on the S4s and S5s and they swear by it. It's a very vfm tyre. But they're summer tyres. Which is why I didn't get that and went for the PS A/S 3+ instead. Great tyres. We just got a couple of inches of snow and the car drove very well (compared to the OEM P7s which were crap). In the dry, it has excellent grip. I recommend the PS 3+s without hesitation.

I have the DSW06 in my A7 and again, great tyres and great grip. Another thumbs up for those tyres from me.

So they are all pretty good then lol. Where I live we don't get snow. Only hot weather and rain mostly in the summer . That's why I was asking if I would need all seasons or would Indy 500 summer tires be good enough but still ride and perform as the others

If you don't get snow and if the temps go only as low as 35-40°F, get the Indy 500. They're not bad in the rain either. But they're really good summer tyres.

Nobody on these forums can be convinced that run flats are a good idea. They are nothing but a cash grab from corporate to charge for tire replacements since you can't really plug a runflat.

Think about it, why don't any of the M cars have runflats as an option? That should tell you something.
