Mercedes has the C43 on the AMG part of their website. Granted it's not a hand built engine, but really who cares? Let's be honest BMW does the same with the M340i - what does it have in common with real M cars? Mercedes and BMW just copied what Audi started with the S and RS brands many years ago. I'm a BMW fan but I'm just being honest.

Having had both I can tell you that the RS5 feels/is faster. My dealer and I just maybe might have done a few runs when I traded in the M340i . The RS5 in Comfort still pulled on the M340i in Sport+. That being said, the M340i is still absurdly fast for an "M Lite".

RS5 is an animal in the mid range, almost supercar fast type of sensation.
I was contemplating RS5, and went with M340i last minute.

It's a pretty civilized car in Comfort (still rides firm but definitely comfortable enough for long commutes and daily driving). In Dynamic it is VERY fast, but it hooks up so well that it's a controlled fast (some like that and some don't - the M3/4 crowd would probably want more drama and rear end slip, rather than a crazy slingshot).

I think the AWD M crowd is looking forward to those slingshot starts. I would consider AWD myself, but a 6MT is a non-negotiable for me. I fear the day BMW stops making performance cars with a 6MT more than any radical design changes.

While you're at it, you should also try M340i vs. McLaren...
340 and RS5 - totally different category from all angles...

Why not M340i vs Bugatti? :
Sorry bud, but can't really say they are totally different categories, yes RS5 is supposed to be a diff category more in line w M3, but reality performance numbers tell a diff story.

From acceleration perspective they are fairly close with obvious edge for RS5. M340i is slightly better suited for daily use. While RS5 is very balanced around corners, almost feels like you can get away with anything. M340i has more of a playful character. You can throw rear end anytime even with all-wheel drive.

The RS5 is faster in every situation. It's also much more dramatic in the way it builds speed and feels. They are totally different categories and trust me I LOVE the M340i.

If 0-60 is your performance, I suggest you get something totally different...
However, from every other performance angle, the RS5 is a totally different vehicle. Yes, you got it right, the M-category.
It is like reading comments that M340i is very close to the F80. I laugh at those...

I see the RS5 up with the M3. It's a sport-back in the M2-M3 price point with the curb weight of an M340i.

M Performance cars are comparable to Audi's S line. Audi's RS line is supposed to compete with BMW's M's. The fact that the M340 is comparable even remotely to an RS5 in your mind just goes to show the performance of the 4-door sedan that's a knock-off M.

The only area it's kind of comparable to the RS5 is in straight line speed. Handling, steering feel, etc. are on a different level. Even straight line speed is not exactly comparable either because of "how it feels". If that makes sense. The M340i is faster off the line and to 60 vs the F80 M3 but that doesn't make it an M3.

Believe me, the M340i is a very quick car but like so many others have said, straight line speed isn't everything. Speed is never the only differentiator between models. The M340i competes with the S4/S5 on every level, but it happens to be faster then the S models...same with the AMG C43. Doesn't mean it's in a different category (it's just the fastest in it).

M340i v X3 M40i

I have a 2019 X3 M40i. I also have a 2019 AMG C43 with performance exhaust.

However, the exhaust note on my X3 M40i is just amazing. Even better that the AMG PE.

So I am surprised that many say that the M340i exhaust note is inferior to the AMG C43 with PE?

Does the X3 M40i have a superior exhaust note to the M340I? Because my X3 M40i exhaust note … amazing growl...shakes the garage on start up.

Also...how would a2019 X3 M40i hold up in a drag race against an M340I. The 2019 only has 355 HP and more weight...so probably not close. But the X3 M40i is very fast. Much faster than an SQ5.

I know... :-)

I had a C43 for a little over 3+ years and now having my M340 for a month and recently starting pushing the car I would say the driving feel throttle response and spirited driving through back roads the M340 is the superior car. Steering feel is a down fall but it doesn't understeer like the C43 does and steering input feels more accurate and easier to point the car then the C43. I truly feel these guys just like the C43 for the exhaust pops... they just need to drive a M340 with the MPE
Thanks for this. These teams were involved and we all know they’re not true M cars. People get too het up about the badging on these intermediate M models.

Pretty sure that would be a repeat of this video. Might as well compare them to the Audi and Mercedes instead.

Agree but at these power levels in our Canadian winter climate the AWD with no 6MT is a dealbreaker for me. Even in the rain I'd be nervous.
