Why the hate - it's no different to using Siri when you have CarPlay, just for native car functions instead.

If you can get the damn thing to switch from miles to km and back again when going between UK and Europe, it's useful

Oh yeah, I forgot - anything that makes it a teeny bit nicer or easier for the driver is bad.

Wonder how this system will be after the initial leasers return them and they're sold as used. It's still going to remember everything?

The subscription will probably be up by that time and you will need to pay an annual fee to get your connected drive functions back again.

Is the Intelligent Personal Assistant superfluous? Absolutely.
It's not necessary for driving.

But...having this technology on hand doesn't present an impediment to the driving experience whatsoever.
Should one decide to never use it, the fact that the feature is available doesn't do anything to damage the driving dynamics of the car.

Surely, this technology is still in its early adoption stage and will probably take several generations to refine.

Remember when the iDrive system debuted on the E65 7 Series?
It was unnecessarily complex with many functions & menus that were utterly useless/redundant to the driver.

Fast forward to the 2010s and iDrive became the gold standard, the most intuitive and advanced infotainment system in the market, to the point where competitors ditched their joystick, hard-plastic button interfaces and adopted control systems more or less inspired by the iDrive controller and menus system.

So while it is true that these technologies don't necessary make any BMW a better drivers' car per-se, and few people would actually be using this on a constant/daily basis at its current stage, it's safe to say BMW is looking at the bigger picture with this technology, with autonomous vehicles being a thing of the future.
The lessons learned now with Siri, Alexa, Hey BMW, etc. are going to be valuable technological bases to build from in future implementations.

As enthusiasts, the Intelligent Personal Assistant is probably the feature we care the least about and most of us will seldom use it after the novelty wears off (kind of like Siri, everybody messed with it for fun & laughs, but overall people don't rely on Siri as much as Apple would've liked).
So again, as long as the rest of the car does what it's supposed to do, the addition of the feature (even if largely irrelevant to the act of driving) itself poses no threat to the driving experience.

Even in today’s idrive system you can find a menu about data nd can erase your interaction completely. I do that every time I return their service loaners, and I did it with the recent lease return.

After all, you don’t want the next person to know where your home is, where your friends live etc or even perhaps the embarrassing musical preferences.

I don’t use Siri and when recently renting a Benz that had a similar system I found it annoying but that may be because every time we talked about the car the thingy asked us what we wanted.

I most likely will turn off the HEY feature and stick with pushing the button if I want it active.

I just hope the system can be updated when new features are available. My F30 is first run and unlike later ones there are some features I can’t get.

If I ever used it, then would have to rename to "bitch". But given that I've used Siri a grand total of twice in my GTI and determined that it sucks? I don't foresee much use.

+1

The last thing I want is another device listening to me all the time. Since it has learning capability, I'm assuming it's connected to the Internet for at least some portion of time. Amazon Echo, Siri, Google Home, voice activated smart TVs...No thanks.

Most of the people on here bitching are unlikely to buy a new BMW anyway as it's missing a feature they find critical to life. The only futuristic toy they'd use is a time machine so they could travel back to the 80s utopia where men were men and cars were manual.

Shouldn't the "change activation word" be "add activation word"? She first changes it to "Hey Mona Lisa" but aftwards she still uses "Hey BMW" so both are valid or is this already a bug ?

One thing I can appreciate here: BMW doesn't force you to say stupid calling names like "Ok Google", "Hey Siri" or "[Alexa stuff]". You can call it by whatever phrase you want, which is great and shows BMW didn't create it for marketing purposes, but for trying to help.

I noticed that too but I think there was an edit right after she said "Hey BMW".

This is all Good But honestly useless
I can tell you now I have never used Voice activation, Navigation CD player ETC..
How about putting in all cars adaptive cruise control and auto brake
and leave all other junk out.

So... I would just have the lady in the video be the personal assistant. The car then only needs Bluetooth integration. Done.

In fact, my first thought was that she was the « intelligent assistant » and the car would seem ridiculous in emulating her.

Anyone who's ever had a really good PA (which picks up the phone 24/7 within 3 rings knows what I am talking about).

Only use for SIRI is « call NAME OF PA »

(Yes, a PA is better than Waze. He/She can peek out the windows of your office building and give you helicopter-like view of the city and guide you through traffic).

PS. I am obviously jesting a bit here to make the simple point that these virtual assistants are nowhere near where they need to be and tend to be very frustrating when you really need them.

Very impressed. However I do remember a Knight Industries 2000 top secret car called K.I.T.T. had a more sophisticated system in it 30 years ago. :
