AA Catted Downpipe

I need some help. There is a ton of misinformation on the web and I can't determine whether the AA catted downpipe for an m340i is legal. I get it's an EPA approved cat and will pass emissions, but is it legal? Particularly in VA. Thanks for the help.

Not sure what you mean about "legal" in terms of a mod on your car. Like, are you asking if you'd be breaking a law by having it?

Gotcha. I don't know of any state that says it's illegal to modify your car, other than meeting your state inspection requirements. But you're not going to court if your car fails inspection.

Check with your state, I don't think you will find a legal answer for your state on this forum.

If the item does not throw a check engine light and passes emission + your state does not require any additional certification (like CA does with CARB) , the item should be legal. Again, im not an expert on emission laws in your state, this is my opinion, not a legal advice.

Thanks, Mike. Now to try to find someone from the state department that will give me an answer haha.

My understanding for alot of places, is that u are allowed to replace parts including emissions pieces with aftermarket parts if it functions the same or is the same quality, if the manufacturer won't provide a replacement.
So basically if ur under warranty, bmw will replace the downpipe if it fails, so there really isn't a valid reason to replace a working emissions part, unless u want to void ur warranty and then claim the cat failed lol.
